A 8 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Have your say on Halton policing April 8th Wednesday March 31,1999 Oakville residents will have an opportunity to give their input on Halton policing during an April 8th meeting. The takes place Thursday, in the community room of police headquarters, located at 1151 Bronte Rd., from 7 to 9 p.m. The meeting will discuss issues of effectiveness and effi ciency within the service' and how police can best meet the safety and security needs of Halton. P roblem m ean s h o liday changes (Continued from page 1) The board has also sought advice from its legal representatives about its obligations and issues with vendors and service providers. Information technology agreements, intellec tual property issues, tax and accounting issues, insurance disclosure obligations, plus employ ment and liability issues were among the con cerns noted. Johnson said board staff are working closely with Halton school and municipal partners through the Halinet (Halton Inform ation Network) work group. The goal in participating in this cooperative group is to implement the most cost-efficient solutions for all concerned. Last August and again last December, Ontario's school boards were surveyed on Y2K issues, with a specific focus relating to informa tion technology and facility/plant matters. In another move sparked by Y2K concerns, the board recently approved holding its Christmas break from Dec. 24th-Jan. 9th inclu sive. The delayed break will give the board extra time to recover from Year 2000 problems before classes resume. The Y2K or Year 2000 issue involves fears of widespread malfunctioning next Jan. 1 when computer calendars change from '99' to '00'. P rogram 's success depends on volunteers (Continued from page 1) "In order to m ake' Neighbourhood Watch work, it needs public support and the community to be an active par ticipant," he said. "It works only because of the community." Even though signs can act as a deterrent, Chvedukas insists the pr%ram depends on zone co-ordinators to liaise with police and disseminate informa tion to area residents. Participants are also contacted by police via an automatic phone dialer which notifies them about criminal activity in their neighbourhood and other information. "That's what makes the sys tem so effective," said Chvedukas. While there are currently 74 active zones in Oakville, Chvedukas says 44 are inactive. Over 100 zones in Oakville have not been involved with Neighbourhood Watch at all. (An average zone includes 40 to 50 homes.) Last November police used the dialer to invite 6,000 pro gram members to the annual general meeting, but only 65 showed up. "It's just a sad situation. People are very complacent," said Chvedukas. "If this is the kind of co-operation we can expect, maybe we should dis band the program." Since last summer, police have used the dialer and hand delivered warnings to inform residents about the state of the program. Dismantling the signs is the next step. "This should wake everyone up," said Chvedukas, who believes this marks the first time in Oakville that Neighbourhood Watch signs have ever been removed.
