HOPE FOR JULY 1 OPENING
Civic Centre Building Job Runs Behind
OAKVILLE - Opening ceremonies for the new civic centre will be held on July 1, Dominion Day. The Centennial project committee, meeting yesterday, named R. J. Cooksley, industrial commissioner, chairman of a sub-committee to arrange the program, with power to add other members as required. The sub-committee will co-operate with the firemen's committee, which is planning a program for the same day.
It is intended to invite a speci al guest for the opening, and it is expected that Dr. Harry Harley, MP, and George Kerr, MPP for Halton, will be present.
PROGRESS REPORT
G.B.P. Farrow, architect, in a progress report on the construction of the library, exhibition wing and swimming pool on the old Central School grounds, said that the middle floor structural slab for the Library was poured Tuesday, with the supporting columns and beams and the walls for the first stair. The main storm and sanitary lines have been laid in the library, and sleeves have 'been positioned in the concrete work to accommodate the heating pipes running to units on the middle floor.
"Progress in general has been delayed by the weather," Mr. Farrow reported. "In fact the extreme cold during the week of February 6 brought work to a halt for two days.'
MID JULY
The library and exhibition wing are expected to be ready for July 1, the date set for the opening, Mr. Farrow said. The swimming pool will be completed by the middle of July.
The committee will notify the contractor to expedite the work I so that as a large portion as possible will be able to qualify for a Winter Works subsidy. The deadline is April 30. The committee approved a plan of relocation for Water Street, that runs along the river bank below the buildings, so as to provide increased parking space. This will necessitate the removal of the present building of the Power Boat Club, and the Sea Rangers' hut.
