EDUCATION Catholic board considers October PA Day switch NATHAN HOWES The Halton Catholic District School Board will consider changing its October PA Day to coincide with the upcoming mu nicipal election. As it stands now, the PA Day is set for Friday, Oct. 5, ahead of the Thanksgiving weekend, but Halton municipal staff has proposed changing it to Monday, Oct. 22, to correspond with the municipal election. At the April 3 Catholic board meeting, trustees directed staff to prepare a report for their review and a vote at the next gath ering, set for April 17. The report will contain background in formation, the two PA Day options and po tential additional costs. The Ministry of Education has to be no tified of the final selection by May 1. While PA Day changes to coincide with elections have been considered in the past, the Friday before Thanksgiving has histor ically been observed as a "Faith Day" by HCDSB for at least 20 years, according to Camillo Cipriano, superintendent of edu cation. "We have had that request in the past by different organizations and we considered it. It's always been a challenge for us be cause of our historical connection to the Friday before Thanksgiving," said Cipria- no. He noted he had a discussion with the public school board superintendent of edu cation, Terri Blackwell, about a potential switch that both boards could observe. As a result, consultation with public and Catholic board elementary school princi pals and councils on a decision involving their perspective views will be done. "We also asked them questions around what they felt about some of the concerns raised tonight (April 3) by the delegation, what was raised at the public school dis trict delegation, around safety ." said Ci- priano. In his professional experience, Cipriano said there have never been any concerns regarding safety in HCDSB schools, noting security in the buildings during elections. "Everything is clearly marked out with respect to washrooms, where people are voting. There (may be) others who feel dif ferently.
