Holy Trinity edged Denis Morris 2-1. HERB GARBUTT hgarbutt@burlingtonpost.com Throughout the OFSAA AAA boys' hockey tournament, and for most of the season, Aaron Consoli rotated his net- minders. But after Luka Zovko's performance in Trinity's 5-1 win over St. Mary's College, the Titans coach deviated from his plan and stuck with his Grade 12 goalie for the quarter-final. The hunch paid off. For two periods Toronto's Malvern Collegiate dominated the play but couldn't get a puck past Zovko. "He stood on his head," said Trinity captain Cameron Rosborough. "When you see him playing that well, you want to win it for him." The Titans finally broke through in the third when de fenceman Evan Heaphy pinched down the boards to corral the puck, drove to the net and scored. Zovko would hold off Malvern the rest of the way as Trin ity won 1-0 to advance to medal round. "That was something special. I got some shots early and got into the game," Zovko said. "With it being a quarter-final, we didn't want it to be our last game," It wouldn't be. The quarter-final victory set the stage for Holy Trinity's first OFSAA hockey medal. Though Trinity lost 3-2 to Holy Cross in the semis, the Titans bounced back to down Denis Morris 2-1 to earn the bronze. The Titans believed they could have been playing for gold. And with a little more than two hours to prepare for the bronze medal game, Consoli wondered how his team would respond after the disappointing semifinal loss. The Titans answered with one of their best periods of the tournament, though they only came away with one goal. De nis Morris tied the game in the second but Stephen Szulc responded quickly to put Trinity back in front and the Ti tans weathered a storm in the third. "We were hanging on for dear life," Consoli said. "We got into penalty trouble and we were short-handed for probably eight of the last 10 minutes, including a 5-on-3." The Titans killed the penalties and preserved their one- goal to secure the bronze."It's tough playing for bronze when you know you could have been playing for gold," Zovko said. "But bronze is still great. We knew we deserved the bronze or better." "For such a prestigious tournament, it was great to come home with a medal," Rosborough said, "especially with how chaotic it was at the end." The Titans had grown used to it by then as their OFSAA tournament also began with chaos. St. Theresa of Liseux, last year's OFSAA silver medallist, jumped on the Titans for three goals in the first four minutes of their opening game. The 6-3 loss put Trinity in a must-win situation on the first day of the tournament. After building a 3-1 lead against Brebeuf College, Trinity found itself trailing 4-3. David Gunner tied the game and Ros borough scored with 27 seconds to play to give Trinity a 5-4 victory. Zovko then backstopped the Titans to the 5-1 win over St. Mary's College that secured Trinity a playoff berth. The Titans will have six of their seven defencemen and seven of their top nine forwards returning next season, giv ing hope for an unprecedented fourth straight league title and a return to OFSAA. But for Zovko, this was his one and only chance. A goalie for the Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs, Zovko had previ ously not been able to play for Trinity. But with the formation of the Halton Catholic Athletic Association, which al lows rep players, he had the opportunity to suit up for the Titans. "It was something I'd never had the chance to do before," he said. "Being able to represent your school at a provincial championship, it's something I'll remember for the rest of my life." Other members of Trinity's bronze-medal winning team are: Brett Addison, Ethan Milroy, Jack Tos, Riley Cerovec, Jack Natyshak, Ben Salmon, Adam Tucci, Matteo Drobac, John-Franco Ionno, Christian Pelley, Matthew Stone, Aiden Williams, Kyle Duggan, Chris Kalongo, Matthew Perry, Ow en Wilson, Matthew Franzoi, Brandon Kostrzewa, Jeffrey Rice, Nate Taylor and assistant coaches Brian Owen and An gelo Sottana.
