ONTARIO Land swap between the province, town keeps rest of Merton Lands protected Town of Oakville purchases Deerfield Golf Club and Fourteen Mile Creek lands from province The remnants of the Merton Lands, including Deerfield Golf Club, will stay as protected green space, according to the Town of Oakville, after it purchases the property from the province. The announcement was made March 22 by Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn at Deerfield. The area includes lands that were leased by the Province of Ontario to Deerfield and the sale was contingent on the protec- tion of recreation and con­ servation lands. "We saw what hap­ pened when the previous government sold the Saw- Whet Golf Course to the private sector. I am proud that the Ontario govern­ ment . will protect this valuable green space," said Flynn. "The decision to keep these lands in public own­ ership will benefit the town and its citizens for generations to come, and demonstrates the commit­ ment our party has to the environment and smart growth." News of the purchase of 128 hectares of formerly provincially-held lands al­ so means the Fourteen Mile Creek area, from Up­ per Middle Road to Third Line, will be protected by the Town of Oakville as well. "Deerfield Golf Club and the Fourteen Mile Creek lands will remain town-owned and protect­ ed recreational open space, neighbourhood parkland and public green space with vital wildlife corridors and linked natu­ ral heritage systems," said Oakville Mayor Rob Bur­ ton. "After the loss of the golf courses at Richview, White Oaks and Saw- Whet, it is important to protect what is left of our urban golf courses so ev­ eryone, young and old, can continue to enjoy them." The Town of Oakville also stated by securing the balance of the Merton Lands - on the north side of the Queen Elizabeth Way and south of Upper Middle Road, between Bronte Road and Third Line - it will ensure its nat­ ural environment is pro­ tected. The total cost of the purchase has yet to be fi­ nalized, according to the town.
