NEWS Despite increase in 2017, hate-related incidents low overall DAVID LEA dlea@oakvillebeaver.com Halton police say an assault and a devas tating church fire were among the 34 hate- related incidents reported in Halton during 2017. This troubling information was disclosed during a recent meeting of the Halton Re gional Police Services Board, in an annual report that showed a jump in hate-related occurrences last year. The 2017 figure represents a 36 per cent increase over the number of hate incidents reported in 2016 and is a reversal of the downward trend the region had been seeing concerning these actions since 2011, when 52 hate-related occurrences were reported in Halton. Police said there was one hate crime in 2017, which occurred in Oakville. "The actual hate crime was an assault against an Asian male, who was told that this was Canada and he didn't belong here," said Halton police Chief Stephen Tanner in the report to the board. "The suspect was identified, arrested and charged with assault." The report said there were two hate crimes in 2016, one in Oakville and one in Burlington. Six other hate-related incidents that did not meet the threshold of a criminal act were also reported in 2017. Most of the 2017 suspected hate crime in cidents took place in Burlington (eight) and Oakville (10) and involved property damage. "The majority of these involved tagging or graffiti at a school, park or church," said Tanner in the report. "Many different groups were targeted by the graffiti, which often included swastikas, anti-Jewish, anti-Muslim, racial and homo- phobic slogans and/or images."
