Sharing the Spirit The Hal ton Catholic School Board recently honoured a student from each of its elementary and secondary schools with the Sharing the Spirit Award of Excellence. Students were nominated for the award by their principal, based on their demonstration of outstanding qualities in the fields of Catholic leadership, family commitment, involve ment in school affairs, involvement in school activities and commitment to a difficult situation or task. The eleventh annual Sharing the Spirit Awards Ceremony was held on May 12th at Bishop Reding Secondary School in Milton, as a concluding event to the Board's Catholic Education Week 1999. The ceremony was attended by the student recipients, their parents, teachers, principals and Board Trustees. "We are proud of the achievements and efforts of these students, who are representative of the quality Catholic edu cation that we provide in Halton," said Board Chair Jim Sherlock. The celebration includes some of Canada's best and emerging children's writers, illustra tors, and storytellers, including Steve Nease of Oakville. Nease is well-known to both adults and children for his insightful cartoons. As well as writing and drawing the Pud comic strip which documents family life, Nease is nationally known for his political cartoons which appear in more than 70 Canadian newspapers. Winner of more than a dozen cartooning awards, including five Canadian Community Newspapers premier awards, Nease's work is featured in Portfoolio, an annual collection of Canada's best editorial cartoons, as well as Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year - an annu al collection of the best political cartoons in North America. Nease's work also appears in three books by Toronto Star columnist Linwood Barclay, var ious school textbooks, federal Fair Play ama teur sports handbooks, and many other varied publications. Nease created the original cartoons featured on the 'I Love to Read!' poster. The readings, presentations and craft ses-_ sions aren't the whole story. There will be book signings, displays, a chance to buy books and related items, refreshments, and free wagon rides around the 64-hectare museum site. In order to reach a broader audience, a signing interpreter will be available at the sessions. 'I Love to Read!' can be enjoyed at the paperback price of $5 for adults and $1 for children.
