For a sixth year in a row, the executive vice-president and group treasurer o f the Bank of Nova Scotia will ride as part of Team Scotia in Toronto's 12th annual Becel Ride for Heart on June 6th. He estimates it will take him about two and a half hours to complete the 50-kilometre route. Brooks, who lives in Oakville and has worked for the Bank of Nova Scotia for about 30 years, is a recreational cyclist. Last year, his peddling raised about $14,200 - highest for one individual - for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. Team Scotia raised about $40,000. "I got involved with Heart and Stroke after my father suf fered a stroke," said Brooks, who turns 55 just a few days before the ride. "A friend of mine suggested I get involved." Brooks joined the founda tion in 1992, following the death of his father the previous year. "And, because of my background in finance, I started out in the finance committee." In October, he was elected to a two-year term as volun teer chairman of the board for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. "The more time I spent with this organization, the keener 1 got." He joined the bank's Ride for Heart cycling team. "This ride is a major fundraising event for Heart and Stroke, and it's a fun event for me". The ride starts from the Ontario Place Bridge at Exhibition Place (CNE) at 8 a.m., meanders through down town Toronto, and follows the Don Valley Parkway, which will be closed to traffic for the day, to York Mills Road, and then back to Exhibition Place. The Becel Ride for Heart is the largest annual fundraiser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, and Canada's largest cycling event. It is expected to generate $1 million for research from sponsorships of an anticipated 12,000 cyclists. "Last year was the first year for rollerbladers," said Brooks. They had a choice of completing a five, 10 or 20 kilometre route. Last year, 1,000 inline skaters raised $25,000. This year's inline skating event starts at 10 a.m., also from Exhibition Place.
