Wednesday, June 23, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER C5 THE LABATT BLUE PRO BEACH TOUR Beach volleyball has always been a "fun" thing to do, but for many...it's more than just fun and games. Ever since beach volley ball became an official Olympic sport, more and more people have gravitat ed to the sand and have committed their lives to this sport. The Oakville Waterfront Festival is always looking for new and exciting events to offer its Festival visitors. With sand courts already in place, it made perfect sense to utilize that space and yet again, offer something new! The Labatt Blue Pro Beach Tour will be taking to the courts Saturday and Sunday, June 26th and 27th. Some of Canada's top men and women beach volleyball pros will be putting on a show of athletic proportions. The Labatt Blue Pro Beach Tour is Canada's domestic professional circuit which visits seven com munities from Parksville, B.C. to Parlee Beach, New Brunswick. Visitors to the Oakville Waterfront Festival can expect to expe rience the same kind of intense competition and fun- loving beach atmosphere seen at stops on the tour. This will be your chance to observe professional teams who participate in the Labatt Blue Pro Beach Tour, taking part in an exhibition of the tour each day from 10:00am to 6:00pm. The beach vol leyball courts can be found in Coronation Park, next to the Rotary Bar and Grill. 1ST X U J I OA K V I L L E - C : e n t r e IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY By Nienke T. Jonkman OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The name "Vince" may be familiar with most Oakvillians from the established Vince • Jones • Deslauriers Insurance Brokers Limited, but it is also tied in with the well- known Oakville Waterfront Festival. Don Vince, a partner in Vince • . Jones • Deslauriers is also the Festival Chair, and has sat on the Festival sponsor ship committee for the past five years. "Bill MacLeod asked me to be involved," says Vince, who jokes that get ting money from people for the Festival was easy for him as an insurance salesman. Vince grew up in Oakville and the family business has been part of this town since 1953. His father, Syd A. Vince opened Cornwall & Vince with a partner and later, in 1969, ventured on his own. Don has been the company for many years, but only changed the name from 'Syd A. Vince Insurance in 1996 to the current name of Vince • Jones • Deslauriers. Vince is enthusiastic about the Festival, and works hard to maintain its community focus even though its growth demands more of a business approach. "It's really grown over the years," he says, "but in every decision we make we consider what it does for the community." Vince is very proud of the competent volunteer groups. Because of their capabilities, his role as Chair is not as intense as that role has been in the past. 'T he best thing I can do is to keep out of their way," he laughs. "If you could pay these people, you'd have to pay a lot of money because they do such a good job." Since Vince worked his way to Chair via sponsorship committees, he contin ues to maintain contacts with sponsors. He is now also involved in event plan ning. When asked what his favourite part of the Festival is, he replied, "I really love animals. One of the things I'm Photo by Peter McCusker Don Vince, Festival Chair. really excited about is the Techni-Cal Superdogs Show and the Petting Zoo." He's also eager for the Labatt Blue Pro Beach Volleyball Tour because they've never had any thing like that at the Festival before. This is an event that will entertain the late teen, early 20 age group, a tough market to satisfy. Even though he is excited about everything going on at the Waterfront Festival, Vince feels the most important part of it is the community circle of action and reaction. "Groups such as the Rotary, sports and church groups make this event happen," he explains. 'They, in turn, get money back, and with that money can do more for the com munity." He adds that the Festival draws in many people and their friends, and becomes an economic boost for Oakville. "Although Oakville con tinues to grow, it main tains a small town feeling," says Vince. "I think the Mayor does a great job in keeping a [sense of] community. She makes it her business to keep Oakville a special place--a sort of guardian of Oakville. It was Mayor Mulvale, along with Lisa Dodd, that basically started the Waterfront Festival." According to Vince, everyone involved in planning the Festival has done an outstanding job. He gives a big hand to the sponsorship commit tee-- without them there would be no Festival. "Linda [Spalding, Oakville Waterfront Festival executive director] is very tuned in to making sure the Festival is attractive to sponsors," says Vince. "Events [committee] has also done a great job. We have a great line up and more animals than ever-- and that's a plus." GARY CARR,MPP.
