32_V1_OAK_SEPT22.qxd after high school. "It's going to be interesting," the Grade 12 student said. "I guess I'm like a rookie again but I'm excited about it. I want to play university so I'm going to have to see the speed of the game (in Division 1)." The last team to make the jump from Division 2 to Division 1 was last season's T.A. Blakelock Tigers. They struggled early on, failing to score a touchdown in their first four games and finishing with a 1-5 record, but did manage a playoff victory over the 3-3 Robert Bateman Wild. Under Orlando, the junior Devils also made strides last year in their first season in Division 1. They lost their first game 74-0 to Nelson. The two teams met again in the final but it was- n't a blowout as OT fell 17-4. "I expect it to be difficult but I don't expect failure," the OT coach said. Orlando said his players have shown commitment to the team and has been pleased with the amount of enthusiasm about the season. The Red Devils will have a good core returning on defence, led by Campbell and linebackers Mike Fitzgerald, Tom Labenski and Nick Kazakoff, defensive end Ross Ramage and defensive back Mike Owen. On offence, they will have veterans in key positions, including quarterback Kyle Sawden, tight end Grant Schneider, fullback Matt Chin-Yae and receiver Zach McRae. "We're not a big team but we're a fast team," Campbell said. "We've got a lot of heart." Orlando added, "We've got a lot of good athletes. I don't think we'll embarrass ourselves." After a year in Division 2, the Holy Trinity Titans will also be returning to Division 1. That will make a 10-team league, split into two five-team divi- sions, with the top four in each divi- sion making the playoffs. The Division 1 season kicks off today with five games. At 3:30 p.m., Robert Bateman Wild visits M.M. Robinson Rams, Nelson Lords travel to Milton to face the Bishop Reding Royals, Blakelock hosts Holy Trinity and OT visits the Loyola Hawks.
