No car is safe from a determined thief The Hamilton Automobile Club warns that no car is safe from a determined thief. Each year, an increasing number of motor vehicles are stolen. Motorists can take steps to protect their investâ€" ment. The first step is common sense; don‘t leave your car unlocked. A surprising number of stolen cars are practically given to thieves by careless owners who leave their keys in the ignition. Always take your keys with you. At night, park in wellâ€"lit areas. Keep valuables out of sight. Apply the parking brake and turn the wheels toward the curb to make a car harder to tow away. Still, a resolute thief can break in, hotâ€"wire your car, and drive away in about 90 seconds. Making the vehicle appear more difficult and time consuming to steal could prompt a thief to pass it by. One relatively inexpensive deterrent is a bar lock that clamps onto the steering wheel to prevent it from turning. This highly visible device may disâ€" courage theft, but it‘s not foolâ€" proof. A wellâ€"equipped thief can cut through the steering wheel and easily remove the lock. Even sophisticated factory or dealerâ€"installed alarm sysâ€" tems carry no guarantee You life is Worth against theft. A loud alarm and flashing lights draw attention to a crime, but false alarms are commonplace, and many peoâ€" ple have become desensitized. A thief may take an extra moment to silence the alarm and steal the car anyway. A better antiâ€"theft system includes an ignition, starter, or fuel cutoff to disable the engine. Some new cars feature this added protection, which temporarily incapacitates the car if a thief attempts to hotâ€" wire the ignition. Car parts often are worth more than the vehicle as a whole, so many professional car thieves take stolen vehicles to "chop shops" where they are dismantled. As a deterrent, police offiâ€" cials recommend etching the vehicle identification number onto windows and other major car components. Though it may be impossiâ€" ble to make a car theftâ€"proof, it .pays to be security conscious. If you encounter someone breaking into your vehicle, don‘t intervene. Call the police. Your life is worth more than your car. 1986 RX7 GXL: Automatic, leather, PW, PL, sunroof + 60,000 kms. BURLINGTON CALL US FOR DETAILS 333â€"0595 JUST OFF Q.E.W.
