Mar. 30, 1994 ‘Muffey‘ part of Hennessey‘s lore ‘This is a scene from Oakville‘s more recent past. Every morning Muffey (the store owner‘s dog), a black Puli, would find a good spot to watch the cars and people go by. This intersection is actually Lakeshore and Thomas Streets but I will always remember it fondly as ‘Muffey‘s THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Corner.‘ By WILMA BLOKHUIS Focus Editor Muffey‘s Corner is quite the local landmark, perhaps better known as Hennessey‘s. Muffey, the owner‘s dog, was the smoke shop‘s familiar friendly black curly haired mascot. She was part of the rustic old world atmosphere of this downtown shop known for its Cuban cigars, newspapers and magaâ€" zines, transit tickets, bus parcel serâ€" vice, Western Union money transfers, and convenience store items. Nobody could ever imagine Hennessey‘s without Muffey. But last March 14 the inevitable happened â€" Muffey died â€" of liver cancer. Normally, the death of a family pet goes unnoticed in the local press, but Muffey is somewhat of an exception. She was, in her own way, a local celebrity. "Everybody knew her," says owner Ken Searl who runs the store with his wife Muriel. "People are coming in asking ‘Where‘s Muffey,‘ " And, Searl responds, telling patrons little humorous stories of his year‘s of sharing shopkeeping duties with his much loved Muffey. "One day the humane society picked her up, and they got so many phone calls from people who had found out about this, that they just drove her right back and let her out in front of the store!" Bus drivers shared their lunches with Muffey; the dog would sit at the â€"Patty Gallinger ‘Muffey‘ corner of Lakeshore and Navy, nose pointed in the direction of Searl‘s whereabouts when he was away from the store; she would roll over and allow some of the customers who got to know her best to scratch her belly; and she soundly prevented anybody from getting behind the counter. "She instinctively knew everyâ€" thing, who to trust, where I was . . . she was here, with me, all of the time, everyday, in the store." Muffey . has been part of Hennessey‘s since before the store moved to its present Lakeshore Road location near Navy Street from the corner of Lakeshore and Thomas, a locale forever to be remembered in Patty Gallinger‘s painting aptly titled ‘Muffey‘s Corner.‘ Searl, who took over Hennessey‘s PaRTICIPaCTIOn ,o THE Smu 1982 NAUTILUS SPORTS MEDICAL NAUTILUS ROTARY TORSO 1 OF 28 NAUTILUS EXERCISES. "The dogs were kept in great big cages, and Muffey had climbed seven feet up on the wire mesh wall." The Puli caught Searl‘s attention. Two year‘s later, the pup was feaâ€" tured in Gallinger‘s painting of the historic downtown streetcorner. The art was rendered in 1986, when Gallinger worked at the Torontoâ€" Dominion Bank across the street from Hennessey‘s. "Patty, who painted historic scenes, had become friendly with Muffey, and decided to include the pet in her painting of my store, and called it ‘Muffey‘s Corner.‘ That store, currently home of Just An Olde Fashion Butcher, was Edsel‘s corner store some 50 years ago, and later Purser‘s store until tobacconist Charlie Hennessey and his wife Jane bought the business about 35 years ago, and called it Hennessey‘s Cigar Store. However, before Searl took it over, Pat MacClean ran it for eight to nine years Searl moved the business to its present location, the old Oddfellows (Photo by Peter McCusker) Hall built in 1883, about seven years ago, and bought the building last year. At one time it housed the local police station next to the local courtâ€" house, and the local council chamâ€" bers. "There were two big vaults when I came here, and we had them removed," he explained, tapping his toes on the top of a huge cement vault left in the basement. The store is curâ€" rently being renovated â€" he‘s buildâ€" ing humidors in the back. "There were bars in the windows . . . " said Searl, hinting the building may have also served as the local jail at one time. And yes, the local Oddfellows met there as well. "If I ever sell this store, I think I‘ll donate the painting to the Town of Oakville." But for now, it hangs at the Searl home, along with a copper plaque bearing the aboveâ€"quoted inscription. When Searl bought the business from MacClean, he retained the name Hennessey‘s as she had "It got to know both Charlie and Pat from comâ€" ing into the store everyday, and I decided to keep the Hennessey name. "It‘s a good Irish name," says Searl with a slight touch of the blarâ€" ney â€" he‘s part Irish! 17 Options for Women workshop Unemployed and ready for a change?
