Planning and public works committee members added a clause to a section of the new regional official plan which recognizes the need for bridge connections over Bronte Creek, south of the Queen Elizabeth Way. The addition, which satisfied several residents‘ groups on hand, stated that the actual bridge links will be determined after "environmental assessmients and with public input." Wednesday. By BRAD REAUME Special to the Beaver Official plan wording change on bridge satisfies concerns of Bronte residents School busing showdown Monday There was much public input at the committee Matthew Robinson, a grade 8 student at St. Matthew‘s School, decided to cast a little light on his school‘s science fair recently, with a presentation on fibre optics. change in wording probably staved off a bitâ€" ter battle between Halton regional officials and Bronte Creek residents‘ groups, The former Shell Lands on Burloak Road are slatâ€" ed for development. The increased population will put added strain on the already heavily travelled road netâ€" work in the area. The bridge proposal ‘calls for a northern crossing to service industrial lands near the highway in Burlington and Oakville, and a southerly crossing for passenger traffic. Generally, groups agreed that Bronte Road should not be widened to four lanes to accommodate increased traffic, that two bridges over the creek were necessary, and that improvements to surrounding roads should be made before further development takes place in the area. Parents weren‘t the only ones to jump into the political process when the proposals were made public. Students from Oakville Trafalgar, T.A. Blakelock and Queen Elizabeth Park School joined the bandwagon in an attempt to persuade trustees to vote against the busing issue. QEP students gathered some 700 signatures on a petition â€" both bused and nonâ€"bused students â€" and presented it to the finance committee Feb. 14th. Public school trustees will decide fate of busing for Oakville secondary students This "ripple" effect could oceur if, for example, Glen Abbey area high school students are forced to use public transportation to reach their schools south of the QEW â€" at a cost of $500 per pupil â€" when they could walk to St. Ignatius of Loyola on Nottinghill Gate, said concerned parent Lise Moras. Delegations and petitions have deluged trustees and one angry parent even went so far as to threaten that loyalties of taxpayers could switch to the Halton Roman Catholic Board should the secâ€" ondary school busing cancellation proposal be accepted by trustees. (The move would save the board $189,000 in 1994). The proposal, part of a fiveâ€" feature budget cut recommendaâ€" tion by the administration to help the board meet its 0 to 1% mill rate increase, was as hotly conâ€" tested as the alternate day, full day kindergarten issue, nixed by the finance committee last week. ill they or won‘t they cancel bus service for high ‘â€" school students living south of Hwy 5? That‘s the /‘ â€" question. The answer will be known Monday nlght as the Halton Board of Education‘s finance committee votes on the proposed cost saving measure.
