b. 23, 1994 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER ~COMMENT Alympics becomes a soap opera tonight with Tonya or a family who pulled cable television out of its home many years ago, the prospect spending a few hours in front of : boob tube is about as enjoyable hurtling down the luge. And yet, for the past 10 days, we ve sat snuffling into Kleenexes, ughing in unison and sitting in ilâ€"biting terror as Kurt Browning nned the world with his courage d Myriam Bedard awed everyone with her determination. We are hooked on the winter Olympics. Maybe it has something to do with these foul colds ... Even comâ€" mercial television has its own weird allure as seen through the delirium of a nasty head cold. Kind of like watching old I Love Lucy reruns. Somehow the insipid portraits, the endless, tortuous replays of hockey goals, the inane ads, the bad hairdos alâ€"Mart responds to DON SHINKLE f n the Feb. 15, 1994 issue of the Oakville Beaver a viewpoint ran in this space from Maude Barlow F the Council of Canadians and nthia Patterson of Rural Dignity of anada. While we recognize this was i ‘opinion piece‘, its foundation was thing more than lies and distorâ€" ns. We believe our future Canadian sociates (employees) and our future /alâ€"Mart Canadian customers are ititled to the truth. And we‘ve taken ich of these outright untruths and istortions headâ€"on. Here are the icts: Q Barlow and Patterson say Walâ€" fart has left ghost towns in its wake cross the U.S. and that citizens in ndreds of communities are rallying E‘ainst our plans to build new stores. at‘s not only false, it‘s insulting to ie communities that we call home ad which understand that we are a »sponsible corporate citizen. Want to see those letters? We‘re happy to make them available. Q Barlow and Patterson said: "A typical Walâ€"Mart work day starts with a corporate cheer: ‘Stack it deep, sell it cheap, stack it high and watch it fly! But it‘s more than just Lloyd tripâ€" ping about in a horseâ€"drawn sleigh looking for elusive trolls or wonderâ€" ing if Ken Matheson will walk blindâ€" ly into the fake CTV fire at the end of _ the evening. It has to do with the small dramas [ played out for us every evening by the athletes themselves. We have â€" been transfixed by the stuff not norâ€" mally a part of commercial television â€" the sincere emotional moments in the not so sincere world of television. These moments have been, in my view, for more fascinating than ‘the tawdry Tonya/Nancy spectacle that gets more tedious by the minute. There were the interviews with the anxious parents of downhill skiers as they waited breathlessly for their son or daughter to reach the botâ€" tom; the disastrous skate by Kurt Browning only to have him come back and do a truly magnificent rouâ€" tine two days later; the incredible focus of an athlete like Myriam criticism of its business practices A Point of View been done at any Walâ€"Mart store. Q Barlow and Patterson allege that Walâ€"Mart operates child sweatâ€" shops in the Third World and that Walâ€"Mart sells shoes and jeans made in Chinese forcedâ€"labor camps. This is a complete and unadulterated lie, first perpetuated by a tabloid televiâ€" r. TYYYYX SAE sion show that recently admitted to planning incendiary devices in GM vehicles to force the premise of one of its stories. Walâ€"Mart does not conâ€" done nor have we ever knowingly purchased merchandise made with illegal child labor or forced labor in any country. In fact, the Franklin Research and Development (See ‘Walâ€"Mart‘ page 9) m"~jC Cz y PX ce e Bedard who was absolutely awesome in the biathlon. More than the big names, howevâ€" er, was the brief interview with a dejected Kennedy Ryan after she hobbled off a painful practice run. Just a few days before, she was interâ€" viewed in the medical facilities. At the time, John McKeachie was doing his lighthearted number for the camera â€" making the medical people laugh with his comments, peering in awe at Ryan‘s reconstructed knee. She was happy and confident at that point, looking forward to her race in a few days. But after the practice run, she was discouraged. She said she had underâ€" gone seven hours of rehab daily all in an attempt to have her compete in the Olympics. "I just want to compete in the Olympics," she said, her voice breakâ€" ing. It was here that we as viewers were treated to that rarity in televiâ€" sion â€" a sincere moment. I mean, I can‘t think of the last time I saw a sincere moment live on the screen in commercial television. It was human, poignant â€" and all too rare. Tonight, we will all be treated to what is more common in commercial television ... the insincere melodraâ€" ma of the Tonya/Nancy saga. We will get all the details ... how Tonya has taken to wearing a small crucifix, how the nauseatingly sweet Nancy overcame great odds to be at the Olympics, how dissimilar they are in style and outlook. But sincerity? I don‘t think so. Tonight, you can bet commercial television won‘t hold any surprises. BYâ€"LAW 1994â€"29 126 and designated as part 3 on Plan 20Râ€"11384.
