national competition to improve the Adesign and construction of highâ€"rise apartment buildings was announced last month by the Honorable David Dingwall, minister responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC); and the Honorable Anne McLellan, minister of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). ; The "IDEAS Challenge" addresses some of the problems facing the Canadian building industry. Many highâ€"rises sustain moisture damage that can be costly and difficult to repair. They suffer from low energy efficiency, poor indoor air quality, and uneven air and heat distribution. Many highâ€"rises are designed with features which present barriers to people with disabilities. CMHC, NRCan, and other agencies have funded research into ways of resolvâ€" ing these problems. The Challenge will encourage builders and designers to apply the results of this research. "Not only will this reinforce Canada‘s role as a world leader in housing technoloâ€" gy, but we will all benefit from the spinâ€"off _ ERNIE ERNIE P effects of healthier living environments and the potential of new jobs within the building industry to meet the demand," said Dingwall.
