The Oakville artist's most visible painting in town is probably the large, colourful abstract on the ground floor of Central Library. Chatfield died on Monday in Oakville. The septuagenarian started painting at age 11. Then, after graduating from the Ontario College of Art (OCA), he designed ads for Odeon and later for Famous Players Theatres, jobs he ulti mately quit to paint full-time. In 1974, a documentary about the Toronto-born artist, titled A Way Out, was filmed and televised on CBC. He has been a long-standing mem ber of the Toronto Arts and Letters Club and the Oakville Art Society. Chatfield's work is represented in private collections in Canada, Aus tralia, England, France, Israel, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States. Chatfield always worked from original sketches and refused to make reproductions of his paintings. "Obviously he's a major Canadian talent, and we will certainly miss him," said Helen Barnes, who repre sents Chatfield at the McLaren-Bames Gallery. "I'll miss him as a person, too. He and I always had great chats about the art world and about art. He was a man of great integrity...a great colourist. His colours are so pure." Marjorie Mason, former student and long-time friend of Chatfield, said he would go anywhere to paint. "Imperial Oil once sent him up to the North West Territories in a heli copter, dropped him off in the middle of nowhere and left him there to paint all day ...It wasn't in the middle of winter fortunately," she said, with a chuckle. "And the railway once gave him his own rail car and sent him up into the Agawa Canyon. This was a very important landscape painter." According to Barnes, Chatfield cre ated some huge paintings - seven feet long - of the Rocky Mountains, and he worked on a series of paintings of the forest floor during different seasons, which have yet to be exhibited. "He was a very disciplined person. McCusker He worked every day at his craft," she said. "He sat out in all kinds of weath er, and sat in his van in later years." Mason and artist Gerry Quinney knew about that outdoor painting first hand. They were part of Chatfield's group of painters who would travel to Haliburton to paint the landscapes of Ontario's picturesque cottage country. "We painted every year together in the same places, with friends," said Quinney. "We always went up to Hal iburton... It has a lot of lakes and rivers, good landscapes, good com posites everywhere you look," he said. "I always sat in front of him because I didn't want to be accused of copying him." Quinney said Chatfield painted portraits in later years, which were never on exhibit or sold. "He did a portrait of my wife four or five years ago, and I'm looking at it right now," he said. "He did a portrait of me, too." Chatfield is survived by his wife Esther, daughters Joan and Dorothy, son Graham, sister Helen Bath, and grandchildren Wendy, Jenny and Nathan.
