GARA pitched one tent in the park. There was food, drink, fun, and games for the children, and enterâ€" tainment. (Continued from page 3) Glen Abbey had its first coming out Over a 1,000 turned out that first year of Summerfest, then a oneâ€"day event held in Abbey Lane Park. At the end of the first Summerfest, GARA left its rental equipment unguarded in the park overnight. The rental company had agreed to pick it up the following day. According to Klein, what GARA didn‘t know was that Abbey Lane Park is a flood plain. That night it rained. The next day, members of the Special Events Committee returned to find everything encased in red clay. The fledgling association feared it would have to replace the equipâ€" ment and had surely lost a major sponsor. "When the clay dried," said Verdenhalven, "it was like stucco." Steamers were brought in to clean all the equipment, and to this day, Verdenhalven swears you can see the same residue of that clay on the chairs. As you can guess, GARA is still using the same rental company. "Anything that could have hapâ€" pened has happened," said Verdenhalven. "We even ran out of beer one year!" After â€" that first year, Verdenhalven fondly remembers sleeping under the stars the night before Summerfest every year for three years to guard the equipment for the event. But who could forget the sight of Mayor Ann Mulvale three years ago when she emerged from a puddle at GARA‘s only Summerfest celebrity baseball game covered in mud. "Today," say Klein, "Summerfest is anything but simple." In fact, the annual event now runs for three days at the larger Nottinghill Park and draws a crowd of over 10,000 people. This year‘s 10th anniversary celâ€" ebration will run from Aug. 19th to 21st, at Nottinghill Park, with acts ranging from Dr. Bandoli â€" a fixture since the first Summerfest â€" to the newly added Much Music Teen Video Dance Party. She added, Mulvale is a good sport and laughed at the incident with the crowd. "It was probably the only puddle on the field," said Verdenhalven. "She was doing quite well, but while running, fell head first into the mud!" Although Summerfest has grown during the past 10 years, GARA has tried hard to keep Summerfest a Glen Abbey community event. Klein and Verdenhalven are still members of the Special Events Committee that oreanizes the event. >o09 "We have about ‘maxed out‘, said Verdenhalven. "It would be a mistake to move anywhere else. It shouldn‘t be bigger." 3055 Dundas St. W., Mississauga Phone for an appointment or FREE at home estimate Ask About Our Total Home Cleaning Special! BURLINGTON
