Sat, Sun. 10 a.m.-2:DII p.m. opening planned for new ADVERTISING FEATURE BY DON WALL Backhoes have replaced pitching wedges at the Glen Abbey Golf Club as construction crews working to expand the clubhouse aim toward a May grand opening date. The clubhouse expansion, announced in August just before the Canadian Open, will double the size of the existing facility from 18,000 to 38,000 square feet of floor space and will radically alter the appear- ance of what is probably north Oakville’s most famous landmark. The existing three-story building will be renovated and two two- storey wings are being added, reaching north to the 17th tee and south to the third tee. Glen Abbey Golf Director Jack McClellan noted this week that the first function at the new clubhouse has been scheduled for May 6, and some time that month there will be a grand opening party. Part of the expansion project has been completed already. Crews completed the 40,000-square-foot extension of the driving range and the creation of a 12,000-square-foot putting green along with a 3,000- square-foot chipping green in October. “Unfortunately the grass did not knit so it will have to stay closed in April and May,” McClellan said. “It should open June 1. We’re looking forward to opening it.” The clubhouse expansion, valued at $4.5 million, was designed by architect Glenn Piotrowski of Mississauga. The new clubhouse will feature locker rooms with oak lockers with space for 275 golfers; a whirlpool and private lounge area; a 2,000- square-foot pro shop; a new restau- rant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner; and two new banquet rooms. The larger, with room for 250 guests, will be called the du Maurier Room, and the smaller, with seating for 175, will be the Canadian Open Room. The expansion was required to meet increasing demand by golfers and other groups and businesses in the community, McClellan noted. “We’ve had a lot of demand that we’ve had to turn away,” he said. “It’s been overwhelming. We had to built it larger.”
