In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul the Apostle describes what it means to be a Christian. Here is an excerpt: “Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions it is by grace you have been saved, through faith â€" and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God â€" not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." There is no argument about our individual need to accept His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, as our only way to be brought into relationship with Him. What often changes and is constantly refreshed, is the ways in which we try to express and act out our joy and thankfuhless for this, our purpose. We simply cannot get used to the fact that we worship a personal God and that He has accepted us, imperfect though we are, as participauts iu His ling' dom! What does this mean? It means that we are people who don’t always take ourselves or each other all that seriously. What we do take seriously is our purpose, our faith, and our worship. What may appear as alittle informality once in a while is really a flexibility of practice built on an orthodoxy of dour-inc. At first glance they seem pretty conventional, like the members of any church you might stumble across on a Sunday morning walk. Ifyou surveyed the congregation for occupational profile, income level and political interest, you’d probably find all of the expected answers to all of the expected questions. Dealing with more important issues for a minute â€" both the Blue Jays and the Maple Leafs have had their accomplish- ments duly noted on more than one Sunday morning (in appropriate . context of course!) There are gardeners and doctors sitting side by side'with accountants and homemakers. (Don’t think for a moment that the doctor is the one with the necktie and the gardener the one without! It isn't so!) Itisaknownfactthatthe oneman with an earned PhD cannot skate nearly as fast as the hockey team he has been known to coach on a Friday night (so much for education!) Perhaps not so well known is the fact that another with an equally well earned Masters Degree in Education has just as much trouble keeping her spirited son well behaved in church as do the rest of us who do not lay claim to having learned nearly so much about being good parents! Put it another way, we’re normal! What might be more noticeable is the conversation. Parents and children attending the same church and actually being seen talking to each other! Sometimes others most engrossed in discussion are more than a generation apart in age. Spontaneous lunch plans at the neighborhood Swiss Chalet can be seen taking place on many a Sunday morning. And the preacher better be prepared for a question right after the closing hymn. ,The ople";
