Oakville North News ~ SPORTS Toms leads Greyhounds Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds are hosting this year‘s Memorial Cup and they have none other than Jeff Toms to thank for it. The former White Oaks Secondary School student scored in suddenâ€"death overtime to given the Greyhounds a 3â€"2 vicâ€" tory over Peterborough Petes in the Ontario Hockey League‘s Super Series, last week. Petes entered the bestâ€"ofâ€" seven series with the league‘s best record and as the No. 1 ranked junior team in Canada. But the Sault wasn‘t intimiâ€" dated, said Toms, pointing out the team had been playing its best hockey of the season enterâ€" ing the series. Greyhounds won the first three games against Peterborough then polished the Petes when Toms deflected in a shot from defenceman Drew Bannister before a huge homeâ€" town crowd in game four. Toms, a 6â€"footâ€"5, 203â€"pound left winger, is in his second OHL campaign. He battled a series of nagging injuries to score 16 goals and 23 assists in 59 games. He was drafted by New Jersey Devils a year ago and attended training camp in the fallâ€"even scoring against New York Rangers in an exhibition game. Diver makes her debut Making her debut at the National Collegiate Athletic Association swimming and divâ€" ing championships last weekend, Oakville‘s Sheryl Summerton finished 21st in 1â€"metre diving and 25th in 3m. The 20â€"yearâ€"old White Oaks Secondary School graduate and freshman for the Princeton Tigers University squad, notched 345.05 points in 1m and 393.60 points in 3m in the competition, hosted by the University of Minnesota. Summerton was the lone Tiger diver to qualify for the event. "She did a great job," diving coach Greg Gunn said. "She learned a lot being at the meet. She is not familiar with the U.S. diving system and coaching but she‘s handled herself very well. She‘s a mature young lady. Gunn said Summerton could have placed a little higher at 3m, pointing to her 12th place standâ€" ing after the voluntary portion (five basic dives). MOHA q crowns are up for grabs Brian Morrison recorded his sixth shutout of the season as Team Five downed Shoppers Drug Mart | 5â€"0 to capture the Minor Oaks Hockey Association minor peewee white title, Tuesday. The game was part of the MOHA‘s house league champiâ€" onships, taking place all this week at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre. Dylan Mitobe scored two goals, Mike Schmidt, Andrew Gaudet and Lee O‘Driscoll the others for Team Five. Peter Weddel had two assists. Schmidt, Gaudet, Jamie Mann, Ryan Cheeseman and Davin Atherley also picked up helpers. Action continues tonight (Friday) with the minor atom (white and red) championships up for grabs (7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., respecâ€" tively). Tomorrow (Saturday), the novice (white and red), paperweight, minor Loyola‘s Steve Bryant is one of three Oakville players who have cracked the Halton Region squad for the Toronto Star Allâ€"Star Classic high school basketball tournament, next week. Andy Robertson of Oakville Trafalgar and Rob Baddeley of St. Thomas Aquinas also make up the 12â€"man squad that will meet Peel on Tuesday (8 p.m.) at Sheridan College‘s J.M. Porter Athletic Centre. Eight regional allâ€"star teams have been divided into two pools of four. Halton is in a group with Dufferin/Peel, Peel and Hamilton. Dufferin/Peel and Hamilton will square off in the other matchup (6 p.m.) with the winâ€" ners meeting in the divisional final, April 8 at 8 p.m. The other division contains Toronto, Simcoe County, Durham and York. Halton will be coached by Chris Dooley of Bishop Reding and Rod Bynum of Burlington Central and managed by Vern Lucyk of Pearson.
