A 911 call came in just be­ fore 5 p.m. Feb. 13 from an off-duty Oakville firefight­ er reporting smoke coming from the rear of the home. Crews encountered heavy black smoke, said Platoon Chief Bill Forbes. Upon entering the back­ yard, firefighters found flames shooting from the two second-storey win­ dows. Fire broke through the roof and collapsed a por­ tion of the second-storey in­ to the main floor kitchen area at the rear of the home. Fire then spread to the attic of the detached home. Due to safety concerns from both the floor collapse and compromised roof, fire crews took a defensive ap­ proach to battling the blaze. No one was home when the fire broke out, but fire­ fighters rescued two golden retrievers, reportedly un­ injured. A fire prevention bureau investigator attend­ ed the scene and the Onta­ rio Fire Marshal's office has been notified.
