Above right, Six Nations' Cody Lookinghorse sings during Tiny Homes program launch. Tiny Homes program a big win for workers, communities and environment It's a tiny project - in size only. The Centre for Skills De velopment & Training and the Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar have launched its new Tiny Homes program to benefit disadvantaged com munities, workers and the environment. The project - kick-started with a $10,000 donation from the Rotary Club and support from area businesses - will see fully-weatherized, Cana dian Standards Association (CSA) approved, all-season tiny homes built by the cen tre. Upon completion, the homes will be dispatched to disadvantaged and Indige nous communities around the country, or sold with the proceeds being used for a range of other charitable causes. Program participants will gain valuable new employ ment skills, while minimiz ing the waste-to-landfill and carbon emissions created during the training process. "We really feel that this program addresses multiple issues now affecting commu nities around the country," said Rotary Club executive Lauri Asikainen. "Not only will it provide valuable skills training for students, but the homes they create have tre mendous value, not just as social housing, but as green living spaces, or for people downsizing, adventure trav elling, vacationing or just trying to lead a simpler life." According to the centre's senior program co-ordinator Ellen Faraday, the new pro gram will make good use of the agency's resources. "Before the Tiny Homes initiative, students in our residential construction pro gram would build partial walls or mock houses that would need to be torn down and sent to landfill at the end of each course. Now, these walls will be combined and mounted on a mobile plat form to create a modular, movable, permanent home for someone in need." Added the centre's man ager of marketing and com munications, Dean Lorenz, "Without the help of Rotary Club, GEM Windows and Doors, Turkstra Lumber and Rush Trailers, this program never would have gotten off the ground. We're privileged to have these amazing part ners involved and that they saw the same potential in this program that we did. It really is a win-win for every body."
