One of my biggest influences has been Glenn Gould. When you listen to what he has done with other people's m usic...his dedication to making records. I feel 1 have a great relation­ ship with him through his recordings," he says, explaining that Gould took an active part in the editing of his recordings, making sure any splices were invisible to the ear. "I have a good ear for edits, and I hear Glenn Gould's edits far less than others...I would love to achieve on the cello what Glenn Gould has achieved on the piano. In terms of simply record­ ing the instrument, he has not been equalled yet. He was ahead of his time." Starkey admits that, like Gould, he is a per­ fectionist and that his ultimate goal to be a cello virtuoso may be out of his reach. "I don't know if I'll ever be that, but it's the act of getting there that's important," he explains. "It's a search for something that you can't reach that gives you energy. Being a good musician is very much built on frustration." To help him raise funds for his musical edu­ cation in Germany, Starkey is holding a concert in St. Simon's Anglican Church on Sunday, Sept. 26th at 3 p.m. The program will include works by Bach, Hindemith, Greig and Webern. In fact, her says, he plans to play some of Anton von Webern's earlier pieces that have seldom, if ever, been played in public. "Anton Webern is one of the most influential composers of the first half of the 20th century," says Starkey. "He was also a cellist and began composing at the age of 15.1 will play three short pieces of his Opus 11 that represents the culmi­ nation of his style - extreme reductionism of his music. The three pieces in total are under two minutes long." Admission to Starkey's concert with pianist Ken Gee is free, but he would appreciate any donations to help defray the costs of his studies abroad. Y o u th c h o ir c o n c e r t to m o r r o w This year the Ontario Youth Choir (OYC) has scheduled its first performance ever in Oakville as part of its 28th anniversary tour. The performance, sponsored by the Oakville Children's Choir and the St. John's United Church choir, will be held tomorrow (Thursday) at 8 p.m. in St. John's United Church on Randall Street. OYC is the principal performing body of Choirs Ontario, a non-profit arts service orga­ nization dedicated to the promotion of choral music in Ontario. Each year singers between the ages of 16 and 22 from across the province are selected by audition to be a part of this prestigious 40- voice ensemble. Successful applicants are then given the opportunity to study privately with talented choral musicians and vocal coaches in a camp atmosphere during the last week of August. The choir comes together again the final week of September for a concert tour, taking the young ambassadors of choral music to dif­ ferent regions of the province. In addition to the Oakville performance, this year's tour includes full-length concerts in Barrie, Belleville, Ottawa, Pembroke, Toronto and Uxbridge. This year's choir is led by the London- based conductor and educator Ken Fleet, director of choral music at Medway High School in Arva, Ontario. He is joined by accompanist Ruth Watson-Henderson. The choir will present an eclectic mix of repertoire, including works by Mozart, Rach­ maninoff, Lassus, Copland, Lauridsen and Brahms. In addition, they will sing arrange­ ments of Canadian folk songs by Nancy Telfer and Ruth Watson-Henderson. Admission to the Oakville concert is $10.
