Calendar Girls runs Sept. 2 8 -3 0 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 1 at 2 p.m. Calendar Girls is directed by Dennis Cur ley and stars Kate Hamilton, Paul Wilson, Lisa Weeks, Sean Carsley, Jordan Brunet, Linda Morawiec, Brian M orton, Kate Park, Heather Smith, Paul Damario, Claire Prendergast, Corinne Bernard, Kyla McCall and Sandy Ingratta, Based on a true story, Calendar Girls is a touching show with plenty of humour. W hen Annie's husband John dies of leu kemia, she and best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new settee in the local hos pital waiting room. They manage to persuade four fellow W om en's Institute (W I) members to pose nude with them for an "alternative" calendar with a little help from hospital porter and amateur photographer Lawrence. The news of the wom en's charitable ven ture spreads like wildhre, and hordes of press soon descend on the small village of Knapeley, in the Yorkshire Dales. The cal endar is a success, but Chris and Annie's friendship is put to the test under the strain of their newfound fame. W ith each performance, there will be a nightly 50/50 draw with proceeds going to ward Ian Anderson House, Ontario's hrst in resident cancer hospice. Ian Anderson House offers quality endof-life palliative care, without charge, by trained medical professionals for people, for whatever reason, who cannot be given the necessary round-the-clock care in their own homes. The house is designed to create a homelike and safe environment where residents re ceive care. To offer the medical care and the number of staff that is expected and neces sary in a hospice environment, Ian Anderson House must raise an additional $ 9 0 0 ,0 0 0 a year for annual operating costs. PtapfeV' M u S ic ; M i Oakville Symphony presents a free Young People's M ini-Concert, celebrat ing 150 years of music in Canada on Saturday, Sept. 30. The concert will be held in the lobby of the Oakville Centre for the Perform ing Arts at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Featuring musicians from the Oakville Symphony, the half-hour pro gram is designed to educate and enter- tain children between the ages of four and 11. Although the concert is free, spaces are limited. People should specify the number of children and adults attend ing the concert when reserving space. Oakville Masterworks of Oakville Chorus and Orchestra rehearsals have begun but the group can still accept new mem bers. Masterworks is a community music group dedicated to performing the great works of the choral classical tradition. Founded by Joyce Sitarski, it is the larg est performing arts group in Oakville, often performing with more than 100 musicians and choristers. Charles De muynck is the artistic director.
