www.insidehalton.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, September 7, 2017 | 30 Family moved a lot, had 13 different addresses before Oakville continued from p. 29 Finally in 1970, he applied to become a Canadian citizen, after living in Canada for five years. "I was no longer a stateless person," he says. "I was somebody. Now I was a citizen of one of the best, richest and cleanest countries in the world: peaceful Canada." Missing life in Montreal, Rahil quit his job in Chibougamau. He registered at Concordia University with the goal of earning a bachelor's degree in mathematics and becoming a teacher. He soon found a job as probation officer and worked closely with psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers. Rahil felt he found his calling and worked as a probation officer until 1979. During a vacation to visit his aunt in Los Angeles, Rahil met Layla on Aug. 15, 1979. On Sept. 1, 1979, they were married in a civil ceremony, followed by church wedding in October of the same year. Rahil went back to school fulltime to get a master's degree in clinical psychology. "It was tough," he says. "We almost ran out of money." In the years that followed, Rahil worked at a maximum-security jail for adults in Quebec, then in the psychology department for a hospital in the National Health Service in England, and finally as a clinical psychologist in Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon, Que., until 1987. He moved his family to Barrie, Ont. to work as a psychometric, and to the United Arab Emirates to work for Emirates Airlines in Dubai for three years. In total, the family had 13 different addresses. In 1998, Rahil moved his family to Oakville -- where he has lived ever since. He is now retired from his last job as a psychometric, assessing students in Halton. His two daughters are now married -- with one living in Toronto and the other in Vancouver. "My joy is complete when in my villa, I'm surrounded by my lovely wife, my two daughters and their families," he writes, at the conclusion of his memoir. For more information about My Villa, visit http://www.antoinerahil.com. Rahil will hold a book-signing on Wednesday, Sept. 20 from 4-8 p.m. at Chapters, 3050 Vega Blvd., Mississauga.
