The event - which gets under way at 4:30 p.m. - will feature the lighting o f a 50-foot Christm as Tree plus caroling and cider inside the house. More than that, says IA H spokesperson Danielle Olscam p, the occasion is a life-affirming evening for all who participate. `T h e event is a good thing because you remember the loved ones who have passed away. You drop in, th ere's caroling and fam ily m em bers getting back together, sharing and remember ing," said O lscam p. "It does make you feel good when the tree lights." IAH is Ontario's first free standing cancer hospice which provides quality palliative care free of charge in a home-like set ting for residents of Halton and Peel. Tree of Lights is a hospice tradition around the world and hundreds of lights will be lit on the large spruce on IA H 's grounds. Each $20 donation in memory of a loved one will help allow hospice staff to continue to provide care and support for res idents and their families. Last year the event raised more than $12,100. The facility is located at 430 Winston Churchill Blvd. Parking for Tree o f Lights is at 2635 Lakeshore Road E,, just east of W inston Churchill. Transportation to IAH will be provided by Laidlaw. The backbone o f fundrais ing is provided by individuals from the community, in memoriams and corporations which have sponsored special events. To keep the facility in the black, IAH organizes a variety of activities. One such event is the' upcom ing raffle for a hand-m ade, schoolhouse patterned quilt created and donated by the Oakville Quilters Guild. The draw will be held Dec. 17th. Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and are available now at Barbette's, Barrington Furs, Bookers, C apricorn Books, G arvey's, Ian Anderson House, S'Nails and The Running Company. Recent past events included the Memorial Walk/Run held on Sept. 19th w hich netted IAH $21,000. Plans are already underway for the 2000 w alk/run. T he Snow flake D essert Bridge held at St. John's United Church on Nov. 26th brought in $2,500. In addition to raising money, said Olscamp, these events help increase public awareness about IAH.
