Internationally renow ned soccer coach Charlie Sciberras opened the doors this fall with an elite school, the first of its kind in Oakville. A native of M alta, Charlie played for the Floiana F.C. before coming to Canada. Coaching for more than 20 years in Oakville, Sciberras has led teams to the prestigious honour of being O ntario Cup C ham pions, Canadian National Champions, and Dallas Cup Champions. Many o f the players, under Sciberras' guidance, have gone on to receive full NCAA university scholar ships. His most recent endeavour, the all Ontario Selects, the first U-12 boys team from Canada to compete in the prestigious Dallas Cup, went on to place third in the world. These boys were selected from the southern Ontario region, including two from Oakville. Known for his professionalism and expertise, Sciberras develops players to their potential. Any player with the desire to learn has the ability to grow and improve. (S ee 'Sciberras' page D3) Oakville contingent helps Stam ps to provincial title The Burlington Stampeders won the provincial tyke football championship last month, and they were bolstered by half a dozen players from Oakville. Tyke is comprised of 9, 10 and some 11 year olds. The championship game, at Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough, was a fitting show down between the top two teams in the Central Ontario Minor Football League (the only league to vie for the Wilson Bowl). Brampton had fin ished at 10-0 while Burlington was 9-1. Burlington's lone regular season loss in the nine-team loop was to Brampton. But it was a close game, with the two teams tied at 0-0 with three minutes left. Brampton recovered a fumble for a touch down and then added an insurance major over a still reeling Stamp team. But the Stamps were able to turn the tables in the season's final game, scoring a pair of touchdowns (unconverted) for a memorable 120 championship win. The Stamps were able to make some adjust ments, in particular neutralizing a Brampton reverse play that had resulted in several large gains in the first encounter. Also, the Stamps made better use of their size advantage. Their slow but steady running game, which culminated in both of their touch downs in the first half, gave them a huge advan tage in ball possession time. It capped off a great year for the team which was strong at both ends of the field. While the offence averaged 30 points a game, the defence allowed only three touchdowns all year. Leading the Oakville contingent was Mark Chiaravalle who earned offensive player of the game honours from Football Ontario. Coach Derek Johnston tagged him as "undoubtedly the best throwing quarterback that 1 have seen in my three years in this league. "His coolness under pressure is remarkable for someone his age." The rest of the Oakville contingent were also integral to the team win, according to coach Johnston, a Burlington res ident who owns an Oakville company, Tecoustics ... Robert Babic ... "is an all star cornerback and a fine pass receiv er. Com er is the toughest defen sive position and Robert plays better than most high school kids." Grant Schneider ... "is the best two-way lineman in the league. His finest games were the semifi nal and the league final." Bruce Thompson ... "is a steady offen sive end with good hands who also helped out as defensive back." Derrick Schnarr and Dair T a y lo r... "were young first-year linemen who developed quickly and were playing well consistently through the lat ter half of the season and the playoffs." Oakville, which had a bye in the quarterfi nals, won its semifinal game 32-6 over the Pickering Dolphins.
