The Christmas Kettle Campaign offi cially ended on Christmas Eve. As of Wednesday, the campaign stood at $58,309, which is just shy of about $59,000 collected by Dec. 22nd last year. The goal is to raise $75,000, the same amount collected last year. The money, which stays in Oakville, is used for the Salvation Army's Christmas Assistance Program to provide emergency food, toys and clothing to people on social assistance and the working poor. Last year, the Salvation Army assisted 700 families at Christmas, including about 1,000 children, at Christmas, with food, clothing and toys. On a year-round basis, about 2,500 families receive assistance, anything from food and clothing to sending children to summer camps. The Oakville Salvation Army plans to launch a new counselling service in January and an anger management course in February. And, it will be handling the day-to-day administration of an emergency shelter, to operate as a pilot project in the old Grace House location on Old Mill Road, from January to the end of March 2000.
