Greg Sage, chief/director of Halton Paramedic Services, called the new proposed medical dispatch system "very good news," as the Region has been advocating for an upgrade to the medical triage procedure at the communications centre for some time. "We will certainly be having to update some of our processes and make sure the staff are all familiar with the changes. But, we're certainly very happy (it is) moving forward with the new algorithm," said Sage. However, not everybody is happy. CUPE, the union that represents about 6,000 paramedics and dispatch/communication officers province-wide, issued a statement on its website that warned changes could result in "negative outcomes" for patients and Ontarians in a medical emergency trauma. "To improve response times, what' s needed is increasing the capacity of ambulance services to put more paramedics on the road. That' s something that would cost much less than putting paramedics on firetrucks and save more lives," said CUPE Ontario president Fred Hahn. The Ontario government plans to update the Ambulance Act to ensure patients receive the "right care at the right time." Public consultation was held in 2016 as part of the town's Taxicab By-law Review and in December 2016, Town Council passed a resolution directing staff to report back in summer 2017 with initial changes to the taxicab by-law that could be implemented quickly to provide fair and balanced treatm ent of the ride selling market (interim taxi by-law). These recommended Background Licensing By-law 2015-075 allows the town to license and regulate various businesses in Oakville. Taxicab B y-law Review The town is reviewing taxicab regulations to ensure they continue to meet the needs of the community. The review will be completed and presented to council in 2018.
