That's according to the Male Ally Network, (M.A.N.), a grassroots, volunteer network of men and male-identified individuals seeking to end gender-based violence. It is an initiative of SAVIS (Sexual Assault Violence Intervention Services) of Halton and funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation as a three-year project. SAVIS of Halton offers one-on-one counselling services for female-identified, male-identified persons and members of the transgendered and gender-fluid community (ages 14 and up) who are survivors of abuse, including childhood sexual abuse. To get the message across, Walter Henry M.A.N. is hosting a conference Wednesday, May 31 at the Oakville Conference & Banquet Centre. Its theme is Lean In, Stand Up: Learning Male Allyship. "The m ost important thing is to start the violence discussion among youths," said Walter Henry, M.A.N. project co-ordinator. "It is also very important for people to be aware that we exist because a lot of times people are clamouring for information we have, but they don't know we exist." The May 31 conference will feature a number of different speakers who will discuss various topics including causational issues surrounding gender-based violence and possible solutions, as well as promoting the idea that males have a role to play in stopping gender-based violence. It will also help attendees recognize toxic ideologies of masculinity, understand the importance of being male allies and understand male allyship from an indigenous perspective.
