W . 844-4881 Business Development Centre scoops award for Halton Halton R egion's B usiness Developm ent Centre has been awarded the Silver Award in a con test sponsored by the Economic Developers Association o f Canada. Known as the 2000 Royal Bank Economic Developm ent Program Award, the award was handed out last month in Calgary. The creation o f the Halton Apprenticeship Advisory Council involved new partnerships which linked economic development and workforce development. In 1998, Elaine Holding, Halton's Business Development Officer, approached Apprenticeship Council promotes skilled trades Human Resources Development Canada and Halton Industry Education Council with the idea of jointly hosting a forum called Apprenticeship in Halton -- Be a Part of the Solution. The Halton Apprenticeship Advisory Council is a community effort involving industry, education, government and labour meeting on a regular basis to identify, communi cate and work towards solutions to resolve the problem. The Council is coordinated through the Halton Industry Education Council. The Council aims to provide a coordinat ed, effective approach in the Halton community to identify opportunities, create awareness and implement pro grams that will directly benefit the residents and industry in Halton. "The spirit of cooperation and commitment from members has been tremendous," said Holding. On Jan. 17th, 2001, the annual meeting of the Halton Apprenticeship Advisory Council will recognize six Halton companies demonstrating leadership in support of skilled trades. The pro posed improvements address the existing and forecasted growth in traffic on the QEW and improve operations in the Bronte Road Interchange area, and include: widening the QEW to 8 lanes (plus auxiliary lanes where required); expansion of the Bronte Creek Bridge; reconstruction of the QEW/Bronte Road Interchange (including the North and South Service Roads); removal of the Service Road Interchange and bridge west of the Bronte Creek; and installation of high mast lighting. This study is following the "Class Environmental Assessment for Provincial Transportation Facilities" (1999) for Group *B' projects, which is approved tor highway projects of this type. As part of this study, a Transportation Environmental Study Report (TESR) has been prepared and filed with the Ministry of the Environment for public and agency review, based on the Preliminary Design con cept presented at the Public Information Centre held on July 6, 2000.
