Either that, or a crime scene. Whatever it is, it isn't pretty. My own tiny street under construction is a far cry from the beautiful streets of Sydney; a Sydney that instantly became magical the moment our new hero Simon Whitfield began the running por tion of the men's t r ia th lo n . Watching, in edge of the seat fashion, as he ran down the competitors was fabu lous. He did the run in a remarkable 30.53 minutes - incredible when you consider the man had already swum 1.5 km and biked 40 km in an insanely nar row course and almost crashed like his teammate Carol Montgomery. I have to say I loved every minute. As a triathlon nut, I soaked it all up, the pre race interviews, everything. And then, the CBC cut to another commercial, the most irksome ones for me being their own promos and people running around carrying little yellow boxes of dreams. Please. Commercials are there to sell, yes? So sell. But don't try to pretend you're in the business of actually trying to be relevant or, heaven forbid, profound. Just sell. Only, please, choose your moment to do your flogging. Don't sell when one of our Canadian athletes is doing what has to be one of the most exciting races ever captured on television. The moment that Simon gave his last kick and began to run around Stephan Vuckovic is one that was indescribable, unbelievable, amaz ing. And yet CBC cut to a commercial. I'm thinking...there's 3 km left and the CBC is cutting to a commercial. Simon could be at the finish line and we're forced to watch Cathy Jones dressed up like a guy in her new special. Brian Williams, I cried out in anguish, how could you do this to us? This was a moment to savour. A Canadian coming out of nowhere - not four-time world champ Simon Lessing from Britain, the man we saw beat every one at the recent Toronto Triathlon, but our own very own Simon Whitfield - to take the top medal at triathlon's inaugur al debut. What a debut Later, Simon said he was think ing...well... silver's a pretty good medal to get. And then, Simon-like, he said: But gold's better. So he went for it. Just like that. According to his coach, Barrie Shepley, it's characteristic of the guy. For the past seven days, we've been lucky to be in touch with Sydney via the internet. Triathlon coach Barrie Shepley has been sending e-mails to us and many others across the country, giving his own partic ular behind the scenes glimpse into the Olympics from the first ever Canadian Triathlon coach. What a fascinating glimpse it has been. From his thoughts of what it's been like living in the Olympic Village seeing a 7'3" basketball player and a 4' 2" gym nast grab trays from the cafeteria and walk towards a table side by side - to his thoughts on bringing Simon out by ferry to the Opera House in the morning, it's all been absolutely fascinating. Just the insight into the training regimen and how they differ has been an eye-opener; so too has the enormous attention to detail every coach has to have (plus an amaz ing capacity for getting the cameras onto his athletes at just the right moment). He described the morning of the race where athletes hop on an early morning bus and then to the ferry dock. Many, including Simon, listened to specially chosen music on their Walkman. One of the images that came to life via the inter net was of Simon sitting on a bench beside the man he'd later have to beat in the final dash downhill, Stephan Vuckovic of Germany. Every day, Barrie has something to say which isn't surprising if you know Barrie. His enthusiasm has always been amazing, but it is positively out of the world during these Olympics. Just a few days ago, he took us through the arduous world of drug testing when Carol Montgomery was randomly chosen to be checked, doubly difficult on an athlete with such an aversion to needles she almost passed out. But, as he noted, it's the only way to get rid of the drug cheats and that's what everyone has to keep in mind. We followed the heartbreak of her loss and then followed the thrill of victo ry of Simon's incredible come-frombehind win. Ah, Sydney. While I sit in front of the screen in our front room reading a few words from Sydney, I glance out the windows at the dust and the dirt and the concrete slabs stacked up. It's as different from magical Oz as night is today. But as soon as we log on and listen to Barrie for awhile we are, somehow, some way, transported to a world where almost 500,000 people watched history in the making. The Canadians stayed up for most of the night, according to Barrie, doing interviews, celebrating and more inter views. They got back to the village to the cheers of all the other Canadian athletes. What a race. What a moment to savour.
