This certainly rings true for Oakville' s Lisa Moody, who, at age 12, was diagnosed with Ewing' s sarcoma, a rare bone cancer in her right leg -- the same cancer as had Fox. On Sept. 17, it will mark the 28th time Moody takes part in the annual Terry F o x Run to raise money for cancer research. The first year she participated, Moody was confined to a wheelchair after doctors successfully saved her leg from amputation. Being able to participate in the run as a "Terry Foxer," for nearly 30 years, is an honour and privilege, she said. Moody' s daughter, Olivia, will be joining her for a 10th time. "W ithout all of Terry' s hard work and effort on his Marathon of Hope, I may not have my life and I may not have my leg. I have a lot of gratitude and thanks. This is a way of giving back and sharing the hope Terry represented," Moody told the Oakville Beaver Thursday, April 2 0 at a kick-off breakfast at Town Hall for the local Terry F o x Run, which will be held Sunday, Sept. 17 at Coronation Park. Moody, a public speaker for the Terry F o x Foundation, noted she faced a 4 0 per cent survival rate when diagnosed, but with advancements made in research, those with the disease now have a 70 per cent chance of surviving. "The numbers, the research... it' s all happening, it' s all real. Many, many more kids are being saved from cancers because of Terry F o x ," said Moody. She eventually wrote a book on her experiences, Terry Fox: His Story, which she signed for guests in attendance upon conclusion of the breakfast. "For me, Terry F o x is as alive and a part of us, as he was 37, 38 years ago," Scrivener told the audience. W hen F o x first "burst into our lives" in April 1980, Scrivener said Leslie Scrivener he was already training for two years for his cross-country journey, noting he had 3 ,0 0 0 miles behind him. "He set out to run in the dark, so no one could see his artificial leg. He was embarrassed by it, he didn't want people to see it," said Scrivener. "He hadn't told anyone he was going to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He was sure this was the research that saved his life." Scrivener first spoke to F o x on the telephone in an interview her editor asked her to do to determine if he was sincere about his intentions to walk, she recalled.
