' D2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, July 12, 2000 Maddawgs take bite at touring U .S. college team The Oakville Maddawgs are playing host to two exhibition games, this week, against a touring NCAA Division II men's basketball ' team from Pennsylvania. The Maddawgs will play the Shippensburg University Raiders on Thursday and Saturday at the Sheridan ' College J. M. Porter Athletic Centre. * * The two games are part of a sevengame 10-day Toronto and Montreal tour by the Shippensburg Raiders. The tour includes a game against the Canadian National Team under 21 at Hamilton's McMaster University on Friday and concludes with four games in the 15th Annual M ontreal International Basketball Festival. * -' The Oakville Maddawgs is a sum' mer men's basketball team run by - Double-Blue Basketball Inc. The roster includes Oakville and area players cur rently playing on Canadian and U.S. university and college teams, and in European pro leagues. For the two games against Shippensburg, the Maddawgs will be strengthened with the addition of Shane Bascoe, Sheridan College's AllCanadian point guard. Oakville's Rodney Baptiste, now " playing with McMaster University, is questionable for the games. The Maddawgs lineup also includes six-foot ten-inch centre Kevin Jobity 1 and six-foot nine-inch forward Mike Piwerka, teammates at Niagara 1 University in the U.S., who are both 1 now playing in European pro leagues. Mississauga's Adrian Pryce, a six' foot one-inch guard, who is playing col lege ball in maryland (Eastern Shore) will also play for the Maddawgs. ·· * "These games should be very excit ing to watch," said Maddawgs head coach Dave Ferencina. "It is not often that Canada has the opportunity to play NCAA schools anywhere in this coun try. These games may not happen again for a long time." ; Thursday's game is at 7:30 p.m. Adult admission is $5. Free admis sion for children and youth under 19. Saturday's game is at 2 p.m., but the gym opens at 11 a.m. for kids to play basketball on the main court and a twoball competition with prizes. - Olympic equestrian hopefuls compete at Hendervale By Lindsey Craig SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER It's not every day that Olympic hopefuls compete in Oakville's backyard. But, on July 22nd at Hendervale Equestrian Complex, 18 riders, including two from Halton, will compete for a berth on the Canadian Olympic team. Halton's equestrian centre, one of Canada's top riding facili ties, is hosting the fifth of six competitions in the $50,000 Grand Prix Olympic Trial series. The Olympic Trial follows the MidSummer Classic, held July 19th-21st. and Summer Classic Aug. 9th-l 3th. Spectators are encouraged to attend all the events. More than 80 competitions will take place from July 19th21st, beginning at 8 a.m. each day. Included in the Mid-Summer Classic is the $7,500 Open Welcome, $7,500 Junior Classic, and the $10,000 Derby. There will also be equestrian-related vendors and food and beverage concessions. Admission is free. On July 22nd, at 1:30 p.m., riders will compete for one of four spots on the Canadian Olympic team. More than 40 competitions will be held over the weekend of the Olympic Trial, beginning at 8 a.m. These events are spon sored by the Ministry of Tourism. Riders competing for the Olympic team will be challenged by a professionally-designed course with up to 16 jumps. CTV will be broadcasting live from Hendervale, while also shooting footage for commercials and promotions of the centre. During the Olympic Trial weekend, visitors can also relax in an East Side Mario's beer and wine tent, or browse through dis plays courtesy of artisans from the Burlington Art Centre. The Toronto Mounted Police will also be entertaining spectators with demonstrations between 1-2:30 p.m. on both days, joined by two RCMP officers and horses. On July 23rd, the Toronto Police Pipe band will join the demonstration. Admission to the centre during the Olympic Trial weekend is $5 or $3 for seniors and children under 10. Also on July 22nd, beginning at 6 p.m., Hendervale is hosting a Black and White Ball, including dinner, dancing, a silent auc tion, entertainment and celebrities, including Michael Burgess. Tickets cost $250 each or $2,500 per table of 10. All proceeds will benefit the equestrian industry -- from the Olympic teams to the amateur rider, through the Hendervale Equestrian Development Fund. At 8 a.m. on Aug. 9th, the Summer Classic begins. Riders will be competing in the $25,000 Gerling Canada Classic, $10,000 Open Welcome, $10,000 Hunter Classic and $7,500 Junior Classic. On Aug. 13, the competition will come to an end with the $50,000 World Cup qualifier at 2 p.m. Visitors to both the Mid-Summer Classic and Summer Classic will also be entertained by pony jumpers and Handy Hunter class es. Spectators can watch competitions from the hillside, enjoy refreshments from ice cream vendors or wander through a Classic and Vintage Car show. Two Oakville golfers finish 37 over par at Ontario Amateur Two Oakville golfers finished with identical 325 scores at the Ontario Amateur Golf Championship at the National Golf Club in Woodbridge, Ontario, last week. Howard Glassman (80-80-81-84), of National Golf Course, and Jason Dziabel (78-83-80-84) both finished at 37 over par for the four-day tour nament. The tournament was won by Calvin Kupeyan of Tecumseh, Ontario, who finished with a fourday total of 292 (+4). The par 72, 6,910 yard Tom and George Fazio designed golf course feasted on many of Ontario's best amateur golfers. Only six golfers managed to break par during the four round championship. Four other Oakville golfers failed to make the cut after the first two rounds of play. They were Stephen Raitt (Trafalgar G&CC) at 168 (78-90); Christian Osborne (Mississauga GC) at 169 (8386); Walter Dalziel (Oakville GC) at 177 (91-86); and Tom Cochrane (North Halton G&CC) at 181 (86-95).
