McCusker Judith Buckley, manager of the Anastasia Gallery, invites the Oakville community to a "vernisage" on Friday, which will officially open a special one-week art exhibit in the gallery at 6 Lakeshore Rd. W. Dozens of artists, including many Oakville artists, will showcase their origi nal work in this exhibition. The bold, whimsical oil paintings of Sandee Ewasiuk can be seen on the wall behind Buckley. In contrast to Ewasiuk's work, Anne Kloppenburg's popular water colours will be featured in the gallery during the month of August. nastasia Gallery is having a "vernisage" on Aug. 18th from 6 to 9 p.m. The opening of this art exhibition promises to be the soiree of the sea son, showcasing a number of Toronto/Hamilton area artists and their work. Guests will have a unique opportunity to meet the artists while they browse around the gallery, admiring the different works of art and enjoying some light refreshments. Judith Buckley, who manages the gallery for owner Marianne Conty and her daughter Sabine, says the gallery business also includes framing. However, art sales are beginning to exceed fram ing business on the balance sheet. "People are starting to buy the art - original art, which is what I want people to buy," says Buckley, stressing that originals grace a home or office with art work that cannot be seen any where else. "I 'm selling a lot of art n ow .. .We are getting into dealing with corporations - selling art to corporations for board rooms, etc." The special one-week exhibit that begins Fri day, she adds, is designed to introduce the artists to the local community and the community to the gallery, which has moved from its original Oakville location on Lakeshore Road East to its current location "across the bridge," a location Buckley says is finally coming into its own. "We'll help put it on the map," she quips. Approximately 20 artists will be involved in the week-long exhibition, including a number of Oakville artists - Robert Boast-Comish, Louise Cahsens, Bill Gowe, Gert Kingdon, Alan Kingsland, Azhar Shemdin and Angela van der Ord. Watercolours, oil paintings, etchings, sculp tures, hand-painted silk scarves and pictures carved in wood will be featured, along with blown-glass pieces and a few stained glass pic tures and stepping stones. The paintings, all orig inals, will include portraitures, landscapes, nauti cal and equestrian scenes, still life, impressionist and 3-D art, as well as a few abstracts. "Abstract doesn't sell very well around here," explains Buckley, adding that Anastasia Gallery features the work of a different artist each month. The featured artist for August is Burlington's Ann Kloppenburg, whose popular watercolours will be part of the special one-week exhibition. In contrast to Kloppenburg's muted colours, the bold, whimsical oil paintings of Sandee Ewa siuk, July's feature artist, will hang in the exhib it as well. Other well-known artists will include Alfred Beck, Elissa Blowe, Rena Bryce, Patrice de Verteuil, Betty Goodfellow, Norman Gom, John Hanson, Susan Hayden, Sergey Malina, Ken Montgomery, John Nagy, Kjell Orrling, Jim Reed, Kathryn Smith and Susan Sprott. "Jim (Reed) teaches sketching and pastels," says Buckley, who has trouble containing her enthusiasm for his pastels. "He can teach any body how to sketch." This week-long exhibition will continue in the gallery at 6 Lakeshore Rd. W. (across from The Gym) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily until Aug. 26th. But August isn't the only month to enjoy the art work at Anastasia or to purchase a quality m irror set in a solid wood, beveled, "antique" frame, or to have some treasure framed by certi fied fram ers at The Framing Warehouse in Hamilton, which Marianne Conty also owns. "It's all done in Hamilton by experts," says Buckley o f the framing. Customers can even try a painting out on a wall at home to see if it's the right fit before com mitting to purchasing it. "We put it on their charge card, but don't ring it up until they say, `Yea' or `N ay'. It's like rent ing a painting for a month, free," says Buckley. Anastasia's next special event promises to be equally unusual as artists create original minia tures for display. "We're going to have an exhibition of minia tures in November," says Buckley.
