The Outpatient Eating Disorders Program began two years ago as a pilot project funded by the OTMH Charitable Corporation under the guidance of Dr. Jane Gilbert, Psychiatrist. Due to the overwhelming demand for the pro gram, the Mental Health Program applied for permanent funding to the Ministry of Health last July. `T he pilot program allowed us to demonstrate the need for the services in the community," explained Debby Gaines, Mental Health Program Leader at Halton Healthcare Services. "Our two years experience enabled us to compile all the data required by the Ministry to qualify for permanent funding," explained Dr. Gilbert. With permanent funding, the program will be expanded to improve access to a much-needed service. In addition to the therapy groups now offered, the program will add fami ly therapy, individual counselling and more extensive fami ly education. Psychiatric, Occupational Therapy and Dietary staff will be strengthened and nursing and social work per sonnel will be introduced. "We've expanded the program to help address family dynamics as this is often a major com ponent of the treatment," explains Gilbert. While eating disorders usually afflict girls from the early teen year to young adulthood (usually 14 to 30 years), males and older adults can also suffer from these illnesses. With limited access to services over the years, these disorders often do not get addressed until individuals have been ill for some time. The expected rate of recovery from an eating disorder is variable, but studies have shown that the sooner people are treated, the better the outcome. The program hopes to edu cate physicians and other healthcare professionals to help them recognize the symptoms more readily. "Early identifi cation is crucial. We are finding seniors in Halton who have lived with a disorder for 20 or 30 years because they were never properly identified and treated. The chances of them recovering now is slimmer since their behaviours are so ingrained," explained Dr. Gilbert. In a 12-month period, the program is estimated to see 250 clients with eating disorders and approximately 150 family members for a total of 400 people. "It is all very exciting! Now, we have the opportunity to plan for a permanent pro gram," explained Gaines. Patients must access the Outpatient Eating Disorders Program at the OTMH -- site of Halton Healthcare Services through a referral from their family physician. The culprits entered vehicles in the garages and rum maged through and stole a stereo face plate, cell phone and power cord and flash light. The face plate and cell phone and power cord were found nearby. A third entry is different and occurred on Nov. 14th but police believe the same thieves may be involved. This third occurrence was at the Jubilee Fruit M arket where the thief used a glass cut ter to cut his way into the business.
