They also support the Halton Rape Crisis Centre and have purchased equipment for the hospital · St. Pauls United Church supports Ian Anderson House and their cancer support programs, the Oakville Food Bank, and vari ous community projects · The Halton Rape Crisis Centre uses their funds to support groups for survivors of sexual assault and for edu cation in the community and schools · 1st Bronte Scouts uses their funds raised to assist young people in the com m unity who would otherwise not be able to afford being a Scout, fund ing camping outings and purchasing equipment · Seneca Seniors uses theirs to fund day programs for Seniors. In 1999 alone, the Festival gave back $127,440 to the communi ty, for a total of $766,817 to date. So, amidst all the fun and excitement at the Festival this weekend, on Friday, June 23, Saturday, June 24, and Sunday, June 25, remember, by support ing the Oakville Waterfront Festival you're supporting your community and it's many organizations. F or the last eight years, people have been coming from far and wide to take part in the Oakville Waterfront Festival, to enjoy the live entertainment, craft show and sale, commu nity performers, local talent, and so much more! This year promis es to be an event not to be missed with an all-star line-up of head liners and many favourites returning! But as we all enjoy three fab ulous days o f fun and excitement (on June 23, 24, and 25), there's a lot going on behind the scenes that we don't know about. The Oakville Waterfront Festival is organized through a large, team o f volunteers and sponsors, which is headed up by the Festival's executive director, Linda Spalding. `T h e volunteers do all the work and deserve the credit," says Spalding, "so I try to stay in the background." A festival the size of Oakville's requires a lot of people power to ensure everything runs smoothly. Besides the months of work in preparation, the weekend of you need people to guard the barricades, sell buttons, check parking passes, help with set-up and clean-up, and the hundreds o f other jobs that need to be done. Thanks to the hard work of the multitude of volunteers who help out during the Oakville Waterfront Festival every year, this fabulous event lives on. And every year the Festival is successful, the community receives a generous payback through various com munity organizations. Different community groups benefit in different ways. For example, some community groups raise money by selling the but tons for the Festival, they keep $1 for every button sold. Other groups operate the Festival's concessions and keep the profits they make. For groups who commit their members to work the Festival weekend, the groups get paid $8 an hour for every hour worked by each volunteer - an opportunity to raise quite a substantial amount o f money for a worthy cause.
