That' s because of its "monumental ap proach" to solving the national public health crisis involving opioids. "As a Member of the Standing Committee on Health, I am immensely proud of the swift action that the government is taking to save the lives of thousands of Canadians through Bill C -37," Oliver said in a recent press re lease. "I was pleased to see this Bill pass in com mittee (Feb. 9 ), where it will return to the House of Commons for a third reading. This bill takes a harm reduction approach to solv ing Canada' s opioid crisis, making it easier for affected communities to work in partnership with the federal government. Our govern ment knows that more must be done to stop the flow of illicit drugs, while strengthening the systems in place for licensed controlled substances facilities." After hearing from dozens of expert wit nesses on this issue, Oliver noted the bill takes appropriate action to combat the crisis. In 2 0 1 6 , more than 900 people died from drug overdose, an 80 per cent increase from 2015. This crisis continues to move eastward in Canada, with increasing drug seizures of fentanyl and carfentanil across the country. Bill C -37 continues the government' s re sponse to this crisis in a way that is compre hensive, collaboration and compassionate. Oliver said he will continue to work with colleagues in the House of Commons and Oakville MP John Oliver partners across the country to bring forward evidence-based solutions to save lives, and to ensure 2 0 1 7 is the year that marks a turn on this national public health crisis. "Our government has taken action from Day 1 to combat this crisis, reflected from the creation of our five-point action plan, extend ing the exemption for Insite (North America' s first legal, supervised injection site, operat ing under a constitutional exemption to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act) for an additional four years to making wider avail ability to the overdose antidote, naloxone, in Canada," stated the MP in an email to the From left, United Way of Oakville's Rita Thompson, Hope Place Centre CEO Deborah Gatenby, SAVIS of Halton Executive Director Alma Arguello, Halton Women's Place Executive Director Martha Barragan, and United Way's Anne Smith pose with the donated feminine hygiene products during Tampon Tuesday at the Galaxy Club-Unifor Local 707 Hall.
