The former headmaster, a long-time friend and supporter of the Oakville independent school, died Jan. 22 at age 82. Troubetzkoy first joined Appleby as a teacher in 1968, leaving in 1971 to become headmaster at the Selwyn House School in Montreal before returning to Appleby in the same role in 1981. He served as headmaster until 1987, leaving to lead the Toronto French School. As Appleby Headmaster, he is credited for establishing many of the foundational elements that continue to influence the educational experience students experience today "His leadership as headmaster, as well as his ongoing interest in the school, has had a tremendous impact on generations of students, faculty and alumni. He was He was a champion for increasing the academic consistency of Appleby, including becoming a fast-track school where students graduate in four years instead of five. "As a community, we are indebted to Alexis Troubetzkoy for his many contributions to Appleby," said van Nostrand. Troubetzkoy was also a prolific author who wrote fiction and non-fiction books on subjects he was passionate about, such as, Russian and Canadian history, the Arctic and education. He was involved in a variety of cultural, charitable, historical, and religious causes in Canada and Russia. "Alexis Troubetzkoy was a clear leader in independent school education across our country," said van Nostrand. "He was a true renaissance gendeman; a global citizen who shared a wonderful joie de vivre with those around him. We thank him for all he has done and celebrate a life of caring and impact."
