Sunday, August 27, 2000 Oakville Beaver Weekend 17 Winning streak continues The Oakville Sting U -ll all-star girls soccer team continued its winning streak over the Aug. 19/20 weekend. The Sting had a tough early morning game to start things off, settling for a 0-0 tie with North London Lightning. The afternoon proved easier with Oakville posting two lopsided wins: · 6-0 over Dundas with goals scored by Jill Korsiak (4), Leeandra Zappacosta and Carleigh Joyce; · and 9-1 over Pelham with goals scored by Jill Korsiak (3), Carleigh Joyce (4), Alana Wood and Ashlee Michie. Sunday's semifinal game was tough with the Sting edging Dundas 1-0, Megan McKillar scoring the lone goal. The championship game was even tougher with Oakville needing overtime for a 3-1 win. Oakville goals were scored by Jillian Korsiak (2) and Megan McKellar. Coached solely by women who play soc cer, the Oakville Sting remains undefeated in their tournament play. Consolation cham pions The Oakville Shooting Stars U-12 girls all-star team, coached by Beth Robertson and Debbie Allen, captured the consolation championship at the Newmarket all-star tour nament over the Aug. 12/13 weekend. The Shooting Stars started with a 2-0 win over the Aurora Stingers. Goal scorers were Brittany Parkyn and Bianca Mirabelli. Michelle Smicklas picked up the shut-out. Game two saw the Shooting Stars knock off the Brampton United Widcatz 4-1. After Brampton took an early 1-0 lead, while playing with an extra player which went unde tected by the referee, the Shooting Stars rebounded with four goals. Scoring were Stephanie Krush, Melissa Snedden, Bianca Mirabelli and Katherine Dziedzic. Finishing 2-0, the Shooting Stars next faced Newmarket in the semifinals. Despite outplaying and outchancing host Newmarket, the Shooting Stars were unable to score and went to a shootout. The Shooting Stars were relegated to the consolation championship as Newmarket defeated Oakville 3-0 in the shootout. In the consolation championship, like the semifinals, the Shooting Stars controlled the game but were unable to score until Melissa Snedden connected on a free kick, midway through the second half, to cap a 1-0 win. IN FRONT: goalie Kyle Anderson. - P hilthy' s Spotlight Teams receive a $50 gift certificate Outstanding 2 4 -5 season for peewees The Oakville Coyotes peewee rep team ended their season at the recent Platinum NARCh Tournament in Brampton. Although they narrowly missed going to the medal rounds the boys have much to build on going into next season's play. Over the course of this season the team finished third in the Detroit NARCh Regional Tour, first in the Buffalo NARCh Regional Tour, third in the Oakville NARCh Regional Tour and first in the Can-Am Cup Regional in Kitchener. The Team had an outstanding record of 24-5. This accomplishment was more significant given the fact that the 11-man squad included three first year and one under aged player. The team is con sidering the poten tial of entering the NARCh Wintemational Tour in Las Vegas in early January 2001. MOMs skate and equipment sale The Oakville Hockey MOMs much anticipated annual skate and equipment sale is set this year for Friday, Sept. 8, 6:30 p.m.-lO p.m. at Kinoak Arena. In League Cup semifinal action, on Aug. 20, they were at their brilliant best in defeating Waterloo 3-0 with Brandon DeFazio netting the shutout. Goals were scored by Robert Meinert, Kyle Oliveira and Gavin Russell, the latter on a penalty shot. Two recent wins improved the Red Devils record to 71- 1, tops in their league.
