Those who have doubts are encouraged to take a tuberculin skin test. A nurse injects a small amount of tuberculin test fluid just under the skin on the arm. This is not a vaccination, but might cause slight discomfort, such as itching and redness at the test site. A nurse will check the arm 48 to 72 hours c o n ta g io u s , d is e a s e those who have had severe blistering reactions to the test; those with extensive bums or eczema; persons who are known to have active TB, or have records of TB treatment or positive skin test results in the past; those with infections (such as chickenpox or influenza); and those who have received live virus vaccines such as mumps, measles chickenpox or yellow fever vaccines in the past month. TB disease can be cured. Medicine (usually Isoniazid or "INH") must be taken for six to nine months to kill the bacteria. Those who stop taking their med icine too soon run the risk of becoming more seriously ill because the bacteria become stronger. TB medicine is ordered by the individual's doctor from the pub lic health department, free of charge to the patient. Doctors must be notified three weeks in advance to order more medicine. after the TB skin test to determine if it's positive or negative. If the test is positive, it means that the individual has been exposed to the TB bacteria but doesn't necessarily mean the per son has TB disease. A chest x-ray will be necessary to determine if the TB bacteria have done damage to the lungs. Blakelock High School, the Region's Health Department is stressing the importance of aware ness regarding, this highly conta gious disease. TB, which can be transmitted through the air, usually attacks the lungs and less frequently affects the kidneys, brain, or spine. While not highly infectious, it must be treated immediately. A person afflicted with TB may have sym ptom s such as coughing, fever, night sweats, loss of appetite, weight loss, and a general feeling of weakness. Certain people are more at risk of developing TB: those who have had TB infection in the last two or three years; are HIV-positive; are alco holics or injection drug users; have diabetes and certain types of cancers; SQ U A R E D A N C E H ^ J - I RST N IG H T FR E E ^ In fo rm a tio n call ifi 905-845-5524 or 905-827-0506 -- J O S H U A CREEK T R A D IN C -- F U R N I T U R E & H O M E DECOR TB tests scheduled (Continued from page 1) Tests will be checked on Wednesday, August 2nd between 3 p.m.and 7 p.m. 1982, Tuesday, August 1st between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tests will be checked on Thursday, August 3rd between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. 1981, Wednesday, August 2nd between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tests will be checked on Friday, August 4th between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Anyone from Blakelock who was tested in June at the school clinic and had the test checked by a nurse does not need another test at this time.
