This was evident Tuesday night, Jan. 17, when approximately 75 people gathered at a candlelight vigil to pay tribute to the long-time school crossing guard who died Jan. 10 at the age of 84. The memorial took place near the intersection of Grosvenor Street and Grange Road, where Wake happily greeted and assisted children and parents with crossing the street every day for 14 years. Organized by Nancy Zigrovic, Iroquois Ridge High School (IRHS) teacher, the about 30-minute memorial featured tributes and remarks from neighbours, current and former students and parents, as well as a moment of silence for Wake, who became a crossing guard at Falgarwood Public School in December 2002. "There was certainly a sadness about it, but it was far more a celebration of Grace," said Zigrovic, describing the mood at the vigil. "It was celebrating a life of someone who had a massive influence in our community." The Ir Hs teacher added, "There really is an absence. It really is palpable because she hasn't been replaced at the corner. When you go by the corner, there is something missing." During the memorial, Zigrovic, who lives near the school, described Wake as "upstanding, taking care of your friends, being kind and being a bucketfiller." "She was a living example of that. She was kind to everyone she met. By starting that, there were stories people shared about her having hand-knit sweaters, hats and mitts for kids, (as well as) knowing everybody' s names," said Zigrovic. "She knew all the children's names, she knew all of the pets' names. We talked about the incredible amount of money she personally must have spent on dog treats, which she had for every single dog that ever came by her." Even though the weather was less than ideal, resident Jim Robertson told the Oakville Beaver in an email it wasn't called off because "Grace would be outside in this weather on any given winter day," citing one parent's remark. "The mood was both sad and light with lots of people laughing about how Grace impacted their lives over the last 14 years she worked in the community," said Robertson. I think it would be very fitting for Grace, but just having something to commemorate Grace' s corner would be nice," she said. Last week, a studentpenned poem and a bouquet of flowers was placed near Wake' s intersection. Since then, more flowers and candles have been added to the on-site memorial.
