However, Brook Johnson struck back for Explosion with a 30 yard canon of a free kick, taken quickly before the opposition keeper could get back on her line. Lightning caused a stoppage after 55 minutes, but after a short stoppage, the Explosion began to largely dominate the game with excellent midfield play and aggressive marking. Finally, the goal was scored on a long throw-in from Lisa Telebar, flicked on by Sara Hay and neatly volleyed into the net from eight yards by Jessica Sacripante. Keeper Katarina Vulic made an excellent clearance to secure the win. In tournament action, the Hurricane won the North London Early Bird tournament over the May 13/14 weekend. On the Victoria Day weekend, the Hurricane were a force to be reckoned with at the Mississauga International Tournament winning two and losing one game on Saturday. (Keeper Nicole Mierzwa recorded two shut-outs). The semifinal saw the Hurricane defeat the host Mississauga Falcons 4-2. In the final championship game, the Oakville Hurricane finally tasted defeat, 3-2, on overtime penalty kicks. Looking to avenge their preliminary round loss to Kitchener, the Hurricane dominated with an early 2-0 lead only to have The Kitchener Spirit come back and tie the game late in the sec ond half. After two 10-minute halves of scoreless soccer, the Hurricane and Spirit took six penalty shots each to decide the game. Oakville's sixth shot hit the goal post and rolled along the goal line while Kitchener managed to score for the victory. In their first taste of international soccer, the Oakville Hurricane travelled to Erie, Pennsylvania, over the June 10/11 weekend. On a hot and humid Saturday afternoon, the Hurricane dominated both games against their American opponents winning 9-0 and 6-0. Sunday's games proved tougher with the Hurricane winning the quarterfinal game 1-0 and the semifinal 2-1. The championship game saw the Oakville Hurricane come up against an outstanding team from Cincinnati. The girls kept the score to 1-0 after the first half but the Cincinnati team turned up the heat in the second half scoring four more goals for a 5-0 final. On Saturday, June 24, the Hurricane played their first League Cup game in Brampton where they advanced to the next round with a 6-1 win. Blast played their longest 10 minutes (Continued from page 17) In a timely manner, the Blast came together with an exceptional display of one-touch ball control and counter attack, first defeating Juventus 4-3 in a hard fought battle and the Jr. Rhinos 1-0 in the preliminary round, setting the tone for a repeat game with the Rhinos. In hot, swirling conditions, the Jr. Rhinos came out aggressively but were soon frustrated by the solid defensive wall of Thomas Mann, Murray Cruickshank, Jason Field and Andrew Kavanaugh. Keeper Greg McKay also displayed an amazing ability to control the box and to prevent the Rhinos from making any real threat on goal. The midfield o f captain Brendan Taylor, Anthony Doran, Cameron Keighley, Matt McLaughlin, Garret Mott, John Sanfilippo, Gihat Sukru and Michael Traynor (Chris Elliott was unable to play J^cause of a knee injury) constantly reversed the flow of the game with aggressive but clean tackling. Strikers Zach Hage, Stephan Blaszko and David Maduri made a number of dra matic attacks in the first half, which cul minated with a beautiful solo effort by Hage to beat his defender with a strong top-corner shot. This proved to be the winning goal but not before sweeper Thomas Mann dramatically deflected what appeared to be the sure equalizer just prior to half time. The second half saw the Rhinos more determined to equal the mark. Hard tack les were delivered by the Rochester side, which resulted in several warnings by the referee. Fortunately, Taylor and his fellow midfielders demonstrated remarkable self-control to take advantage of the situ ation. With about ten minutes left to go in the game, the crowd quieted as midfield er Doran sent a high cross towards the upper corner of the Rhino net, only to be deflected away with an unbelievable save by the Rochester keeper. This set the tone for what could have been the longest ten minutes in Blast his tory. With renewed determination the Blast controlled the field. Coach Ed McLaughlin, assistant Adam Maduri and manager Maurice Traynor were obviously pleased with the result and hope to see the excellent cal iber of soccer and sportsmanship continue within the boys' premier division play. Inaugural season proving to be m em orable The Oakville Storm U-11A girls rep team are having a great inaugural season with a 7-4-1 record, outscoring the opposition 35-17. In recent league action the girls split a home and home series with first place Hamilton Sparta winning at home 3-2 and snap ping Sparta's unbeaten streak with goals by Justine Bernier, Victoria O'Hara and Angela Piccoli, and then losing to Hamilton at home 2-0. A disappointing 3-3 tie against Saltfleet saw goals by Angela Piccoli (2) and Katie Mason with great performances by all star call-ups Jillian Korsiak and Victoria Casey. In an action packed game against London Power, the girls just ran out of time in the second half and lost 2-1 with a lone goal by U-10 call-up Cassandra Russo. Honourable mention to Justine Bernier and Katie Mason for the great setup on that goal. The whole team played probably one of their best games of the season. A 6-0 win against Georgetown saw all-star call-ups Carleigh Joyce (2 goals) and goalie Courtney Cairns (1 goal) show their stuff in adding to goals by Victoria O 'Hara, Stephanie Ovsec and Katie Mason. A great defensive team con sisting of goalie Kelly Zinkiewich, defenders Kristina Pade, Jacquelyn Ferguson, Stephanie Ovsec, Fiona Clark, Megan Skippen and Gillian Knap as well as midfielders Jenna Manchisi, Megan Tilley, Justine Bernier, Alison Wiseman and Eden Garry have kept goals against to a minimum. The Storm would like to thank their sponsors: PaveTar Construction, Dan Mac Plumbing, The Altruists of Oakville, Craftwell Vinyl, Arthur Murray Dance and Glenburnie School. There's a whole new world out there discover it today.
