I'll happily head out for a jog with my daughter, although I have to admit I get tired of being left behind. And I'll go for a bike ride with my son, as long as he doesn't hang off the side of his BMX bike or do stunts for a laugh just to freak out his mother. Ha ha. But when it comes to the simple shopping trip, I am lost. I am complete ly and utterly bewildered. I know life has changed....it's no longer slow walks downtown pushing a stroller or wagon, maybe stopping for an ice cream. My kids have outgrown all of that. They may relent and be seen with us, their uncool parents, in public, but it better be someplace okay -- not at a concert hall or outdoor park, for heav en's sake. Dropping them off at a movie, maybe. Or, heaven help us, at a mall. Oh, please, I beg you...don't make me go to a mall. Don't place me behind the wheel of my car, the reluctant chauf feur, forced to listen to Kiss 92's Tarzan Dan's dubious charm seeping through the radio and then try t o ' negotiate through traffic as my daughter punches buttons on my radio...punch, punch, punch. "Can you believe that song," she screams over the radio, the open win dow, the traffic, the sound of my brain splitting in two. "They used to be so good, that band, and listen to them now." To think just a few short years ago we were listening to Bach on our way to violin lessons. Bach? You must be kid ding. Isn't he 40 or some thing?" she says, idly, busy again with the buttons of the car radio. Punch, punch, punch. Well, it's not as if we are not there to have a conversation or anything. We are on a mission. We are heading to a mall for a skirt. I have already fore warned my daughter: I don't do skirts. Dresses, sometimes. But skirts? What do I know about them? All I say, is.... get one that's cheap. She just shakes her head, that glint in her eye that says it all: I know what I want. "Well, what about that skirt you got for Deb's wedding last year?' I venture. "Oh, Mom," she says, a look of pity on her face. "Those skirts are so out." Oh. Off to the mall. We get a parking spot, usually 14 miles from the nearest entrance and easily forgettable because it all looks the same. I always lose the car, making my kids crazy. Well, I suppose losing the car isn't quite as bad as losing the keys, which I also do on a regular basis. And when it is both, they are ready to walk home. But not quite. Walk???? Are you kidding? That's the puzzle. Whereas Kate will happily walk 80 miles in a nondescript, culturally bereft mall looking for the perfect skirt (it's a skirt, I repeat wearily, just a skirt), there seems to be a problem translating that energy into the everyday stuff, like walking the dog around the block for instance. But I am whining. This skirt, I should mention, is not just a skirt. There are many different skirts, I am told. Firmly. I see, out of the comers of my eye, other mothers out skirt shopping with their daughters. The goal of Oakville Green is to ensure that the Town of Oakville imple ment the recommendations of its own consultants, LGL Ltd.; the Region's own environmental Advisory Committee, EEAC, and the Town's own official plan. These recommendations support the creation of a Natural Heritage System, a contiguous and viable'green way wildlife corridor that will run east-west through the study Letters to the Editor area, and will allow for a protected habi tat where wildlife and public recreation may co-exist. The Natural Heritage System will be created from the 1,250 acres of lands designated by LGL as having significant environmental fea tures. Oakville Green is not opposed to sustainable development. Oakville Green's use of the world "WHOA" is meant to slow down the process until the Town commits to a detailed and thorough implementation plan that will explain how the Town intends to preserve the 1,250 acres of land to be used for the Natural Heritage System. How can we move forward if know, this skirt shopping phenomenon. The study is addressing the EA requirements for both Third Line and the interchange with the QEW.
