www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, D ecem ber 9, 2 0 1 6 | 4 O nline p etitio n launched to `Save G len Abbey' by Nathan Howes Oakville Beaver Staff Glen Abbey Golf Course (GAGC) isn't just an Oakville landmark many w ish to preserve -- it' s part of Canadian golf history That' s how Oakville resident Joe Brandt, a member of the Save Glen Abbey coalition opposed to ClubLinks' s proposed development of the local golf course, sees it. Last week, the group launched an online petition calling on municipally-, regionallyand provincially-elected officials to oppose GAGC development by "recognizing the intangible value of cultural and natural heritage of preserving Glen Abbey, and thereby, the legacy of nature, sport and history for future generations," it stated. Since launching last week, the petition has acquired more than 1,200 signatures. In November, ClubLink officially filed an application with the Town of Oakville to develop GAGC. The property owner' s plan has been met with strong public opposition, including a protest held Thursday (Dec. 1) at GAGC' s A sign carried by protesters as they picketed the entrance to Glen Abbey Golf Course, where ClubLink was hosting an open house on its proposed development plan for the property. Another open house will be held Monday (Dec. 12). | Nikki Wesley/Metroland front gate while ClubLink held a public forum inside the clubhouse. "It is, without a doubt, a historic golf course. Whether it becom es a heritage golf course is another question," Brandt told the Oakville Beaver Tuesday (Dec. 6). "Now, (ClubLink) wants to trash it. I don't think people like that." Save Glen Abbey initiated the proposal, not only to demonstrate distaste for the property owner' s plan, but for public officials to "read the com m ents" from its supporters, Brandt said. "If you read through the comments, som e of them just say what people feel. They're from the heart. They do support preserving this as a cultural heritage site," said Brandt. "We can weigh in on this and let our elected officials know, and this is not to put any pressure on them, how the community feels." It isn't just Oakville residents w ho oppose development -- Brandt noted the petition has garnered support from those residing in Burlington, Mississauga and Calgary, Alta. "It is to let the councillors know there is a lot of support in the community, if they considered a heritage designation (for GAGC). They w ouldn't be doing it alone in the dark. They w ould be doing it with the full support of many, many people in, and outside, town," said Brandt. The group has received a wide-range of comments from signatories, touching on green space, natural heritage and personal connections to the course. "It' s synonym ous with Oakville. It has been for 40 years," said Brandt. He said the course was "purpose-built" to be the permanent hom e of the PGA Canadian Open tournament. "There is history involved, there is heritage involved, there is green space involved. This (course) has meaning to the community," he said. see Residents on p.5 c IN Dr. M a ris a D 'A n g e lo Dr. S h iv a n i S a g g a r We offer full Family Dental Services in our new m odern office in a calm a n d relaxing environment.
