The Lords proceed to outscore the Titans 28-9 on the way to a 28-15 victory. A sometimes struggling Nelson offence turned the ball over six times and leaned on its defence to minimize the damage. The Lords' Ben Cowman, who started playing football with the Burlington Stampeders eight years ago, said it was the intensity that drew him to play defence. "I just loved that," he said. "You become a different creature. You can be the nicest guy off the field but you become something different when you're playing defence." That intensity hit new levels during the third quarter. Cowman and his fellow Nelson Lords defenders had just stalled a Holy Trinity Titans drive on the five-yard line to preserve a 21-6 advantage. Two plays later they were back on the field when a Titan interception gave Trinity the ball back at Nelson's six-yard line. On second and goal, Trinity's Damian Lee found a hole and appeared headed for the end zone when Cowman wrapped him up and dragged him down at the one-yard line. When Trinity handed the ball to Lee again on the next play, he was met by a wall of Lords. "Defence doesn't get a lot of credit," said Nelson coach Jeff Brock. "Offence makes a lot of flashy plays but defence wins. I'm hard on them, but they always deliver." Trinity took a 6-0 lead on a six-yard pass from quarterback Kurtis Rourke to Lex Jeffrey on the first play of the second quarter, but didn't score another touchdown until the last play of the game when Rourke hit Justice McRae on a seven-yard play. Trinity picked off passes on two of Nelson's first three possessions before the Lords got things rolling on the ground. Jared Currie's one-yard plunge for Nelson made it 7-6. That seemed to settle Currie as he completed five of six passes for 59 yards on the next possession. Ihasz finished the 12-play drive with a three-yard touchdown run. Cowman sacked Trinity's Kurtis Rourke forcing Trinity to punt from deep in its own end and Nelson, getting the ball back with less than a minute to play, capitalized. Will Corby reached behind to tip the ball back to himself then pulled it in as he landed in the corner of the end zone. Holy Trinity recovered a fumble late in the game but Nelson's Robbie Walker made a diving interception to stop the Titans in Nelson territory. The elusive Halton title, the first for the Lords since 2011, was motivation for the Burlington squad against Holy Trinity. "(The Titans have) a lot of weapons. Not just one or two, but three or four," said Walker. Olympics sailor Lee Parkhill did double duty as award winner and special guest speaker, relating experiences from his start in the sport at age nine to competing in Rio for Canada in August. Following the ceremony, guests were invited to take photos alongside Parkhill and the bronze medal he won at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto. Also honoured were Wayne Moorehead, the past president and development grant committee chair of Sport Oakville who is a former coach, trainer, convener and executive member with the Minor Oaks Hockey Association; and Cathy Watt, the current organizer of the Sport Awards who is a former board member of Sport Oakville, holding the positions of director, president, secretary and treasurer. In addition to the three special awards, others were presented to individual athletes, teams, coaches and volunteers from 17 sports organizations for excellence, dedication, performance and contribution to the sports community.
