Honour means a lot to veterans continued from p.12 to celebrate Canada's veterans, not just during Veterans' Week in November, but all year. Oliver noted the Oakville community paused during the June 6 anniversary of D-Day and reflected with a ceremony at the Bronte Cenotaph. Another ceremony was held in January for Oakville's Ted Kersey, who received the French Legion of Honour for his role in liberating France from Nazi occupation. More recently, Sept. 24, the Town of Oakville celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Lorne Scots Regiment by unveiling a monument in George's Square. Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent and Colonel-in-Chief of the Lorne Scots, attended that ceremony. Some of the guests included Canada's own `Rosie the Riveter' Vi Connolly, who quit her job as a telephone operator when her husband Bill went to war in 1942 and took a new one at a Hamilton steel mill where she helped build warships for the Royal Canadian Navy. Former Lancaster bomber pilot Jack Finan, 96, who, last year flew on a restored Lancaster courtesy of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, was another guest. "This is impressive. Very impressive," he said. Retired Master Corporal Collin Fitzgerald, who served in both Bosnia and Afghanistan, was also present. Fitzgerald received the Medal of Military Valour for his actions on May 24, 2006 during an ambush in Afghanistan. "We were ambushed from three or four different positions. At one point, one of the vehicles in the middle of our convoy was hit by what I can only assume was a recoilless rifle, which is the equivalent of a tank round, basically," said Fitzgerald. "It punched through a mud wall and through the armour of our G Wagon, entering the vehicle, taking our interpreter's legs and exploding on the inside." Fitzgerald had been near the vehicle when it was hit and was knocked unconscious very briefly. When he came to, he jumped inside the vehicle, which was now burning, and with the help of another soldier, drove it off the road so other vehicles in the convoy could pass and escape the enemy ambush. Fitzgerald's medal citation reads that by repeatedly exposing himself to enemy fire by entering the burning vehicle and getting it off the road, he undoubtedly contributed to saving the lives of his fellow platoon members. "I was just doing what anybody else would have done," he said. "I was in the wrong place at the right time." Fitzgerald said he was honoured to be in the company of the veterans from past conflicts during the luncheon. "This is simply amazing. The work that has gone into this event," he said."It is an amazing way for someone to give back to Canadians who have really experienced and gone through a lot. I'm a little thrown back by this." 13 | Friday, November 11, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Insure Your Future todaY · Preferred rates for accident free drivers. · Save up to 40% on your policy.
