This year.. .in Ontario alone, these students raised $4 million," said Hierlihy "It shows the next generation is actually ready to take over from a different generation. Generations do come and go." Although the CCS has evolved quite a bit in its existence, Hierlihy said its status as a community-based, volunteer-driven organization has remained intact. "Sometimes we might get more and less staff, but we have an army of close to 40,000 people across Ontario delivering the values of what we do every day," said Hierlihy "We count on you and we appreciate what you do because the moment in everybody's experience when they first hear they have cancer changes their life." The CCS invested more than $42 million in cancer research in 2015. With support from donors, the group has increased the five-year survival rate from 25 per cent in 1947 to more than 60 per cent today The CCS Halton Community Office currently has more than 1,200 volunteers. Two of them are Agnes Reynolds, winner of the 50-Year Service Award, and Ennie Hurst, who took home the 35-Year accolade. The friends are both residential canvassers. Hurst, who has canvassed the same area for 35 years, said it's nice to converse with familiar people every year on behalf of CCS. "Every little bit helps, even if people only give you $2 at the door. It doesn't matter. If everybody gave a dollar or two dollars, that would be great," said Hurst. "It makes a difference to do something for the Canadian Cancer Society It's going to help somebody along the way" Reynolds said it's great to receive the longestserving volunteer award, but "it just dates me, that's all." "It's very important (to get involved in the community) because we can do this. We can make a difference," said Reynolds. The 45-Year Service Award was given to Rosetta Semple, who became a volunteer after learning of a co-worker' s cancer diagnosis when Wilsomn, Wendy Janisse, Roberta Veitch, Betty Rogers, Jean Doiron 5-Year - Gord McCrae, Keith Bakewell, Mary Hampton, Yolanda McCann, Andrew Bates, Elizabeth Kiddle, Ron Turner, Rina Blacklock, Nancy Adams, Catherine Hodgkinson, Carol Andersen, Denise Foster, Evan Black, Gail Fitzgibbon, George Strickland, Jane Parke, Jennifer Allen, John Hantoumakos, Larry Miotto, Marilyn Baker, Nancy Howard, Peter James, Sarah Home, Susan Price, Vince Farano Community Impact recipients Community Operations Community Leadership Bloomfield, Bev Osborne Turner - Pam Toupin, Rose - Janet Hanlin, Ron Agnes Reynolds Ennie Hurst - Sheryl Bates - Ladies Drive 4 Cancer, Oakville Blades Corporate Fundraising - Chudleigh' s Community Champion - Men' s Golfing 4 Cancer Corporate Cham pion -Budds' Imported Cars Community Youth Leadership - Keenen Qin Community Revenue Community Fundraising Stackhouse-Bates Family Scholarship - she was an Oakville Hydro employee.
