www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, October 27, 2016 | 12 Police charge 13 distracted drivers in five hours by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff Halton police are again telling motorists to put down the phone while driving after two officers laid 13 distracted driving charges in Oakville in just five hours Sunday (Oct. 23). Const. Marc Taraso said he and his partner were tasked with looking for distracted drivers along the Trafalgar Road corridor, from the QEW to Lakeshore Road, while on bike patrol Sunday. They apparently didn't have to look too hard because between 10 a.m.-3 p.m. they laid 13 distracted driving charges under the Highway Traffic Act. $490 fine and three demerit points on conviction Each charge comes with a $490 fine and three demerit points upon conviction. Taraso said the numbers don't surprise him. "I am very disappointed with the amount of distracted drivers I am finding on a daily basis," he said. "We have come a long way in terms of compliance since the distracted driving legislation first came into force; unfortunately, some drivers are just not getting the message when it comes to the dangers of distracted driving. One offender I stopped had two prior convictions for distracted driving, and yet was still caught with a phone in their hand." Three tickets handed out during interview During this interview with the Oakville Beaver, Taraso pointed out his partner had handed out three more tickets for distracted driving in the last 45 minutes. He said all the individuals ticketed Sunday had been texting, making phone calls, checking schedules or programming their phone's GPS feature. All these actions are illegal, said Taraso. The Halton constable said distracted driving enforcement remains a top concern for Halton police as it has become the leading cause of death on Ontario roads. Skyway Jewellers EARN up to $3000!
