The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday A pril 5, 2006 - 7 Fraud suspect accused of lying about son's illness Halton Regional Police are asking possible victims to come forward after they arrest ed a man who lied about hav ing a sick son and was fraudu lently fundraising for a hospi tal. Investigators say they have laid six charges against the Mississauga man who allegedly bilked at least 46 people out of their money in several munic ipalities, including Oakville. On March 29, police were contacted by a suspicious Oakville resident who felt things just didn't add up when a man came to his door pass ing himself off as representing the Credit Valley Hospital. The suspect -- who was telling his victims that he had a son who was suffering from leukemia -- was unable to provide suitable details to sup port his claims, leading to the call to police. By that time, however, the* man had managed to obtain 46 cheques totaling $1,160 and an unknown quantity of cash donations before he was appre hended. Police believe the man tar geted homes in Oakville, Mississauga and Etobicoke since January. Richard Sedore, 39, of Mississauga has been charged with six counts of fraud. Detectives believe that more vic tims have yet to be located, since their preliminary investigation sug gests that another 60 people were also duped, but to date remain unaware of the fraud. The investigation is ongo ing and more charges are expected. As a result of this case, police are rem inding citizens to thoroughly check on the credentials of- any indi vidual seeking donations at their door. Look for a suitable identification tag and a contact number that you can call to verify the fundraising should you have questions about the solicitor or-their cause. Faith and freedom o f conscience to p ic o f sem inar In the wake of controversial depictions of the Muslim Prophet Muhammad in the media, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Canada will host a multi-faith seminar in Oakville tomorrow (Thursday). My Faith and Freedom of Conscience will be held at Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, 1430 Trafalgar Rd., SCAET Auditorium (Room S235), from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Canada strongly condemns the action of some media depicting and publishing a disrespectful carica ture of Muhammad, the Holy Prophet of Islam. "We are hurt the most, however, our response is peaceful," said Hadrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, who leads Ahmadiyya Muslim Community world wide. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community believes Muslims around the world should respond with respect and tolerance and not resort to violence in any shape and form -- as Muhammad instructed not to respond with hate. The group, across Canada and Ontario, is responding with a series of campaigns of informa tion forums to address this issue of freedom of conscience. April 7 -9th, 2006 ; r M iC litiy Animal J f c ip iil Dipper was presented tctour Malton Hospital on the early morning of Febru ary 2,2006 after being struck by a car. With the assistance of Mississauga Animal Control, Dipper was transported to McCleary Animal Hospital in Clarkson for treatment and continued emergency therapy. She had severe deep contusions and lacerations over her back legs and pelvis which also happened to be -broken in many places. She suffered from considerable blood loss and nerve damage. Doctors worked through the night to control a life threatening heart arrhythmia as well as to maintain hernntravenous fluids. The next day, despite all odds, Dipper showed signs of improvement and a will to live. It was evident to all that had worked^o hard to keep her alive. A few days later, Dipper's owner declined further responsibility for her and a group decision was made at the hospital, along with the owners consent, that we would carry on the care for Dipper at our own expense. Her blood loss had been extensive, her wounds were deep and infection was a serious threat. The team persisted and slowly but surely Dipper's wounds started to heal and her infection subsided. Dipper is now able to ambulate on her own, but still has some neurological deficiencies that may be permanent. She is undergoing physiotherapy, and will be taken for swimming to strengthen her limbs. She is currently residing part time at Dr. McCleary's "Rehab" farm, where she is getting lots of fresh air, exercise, and most importantly TLC. We would like to thank the clients and their pet's that so generously contributed to the "Dipper Fund", so we could give our Darling Dipper a second chance. Your generosity was overwhelming and greatly appre ciated. Thanks to you, Dipper can put her best paw forward. Dipper is ready to be adopted into a new family.
